Myron Hashiguchi is considered one of the most prominent businessmen in the Federated States of Micronesia.
His company is the terminal operator for Chuuk's commercial port on Weno; it is the Chuuk agent for Horizon Lines and Kyowa Shipping Co. Ltd., it is a fishing agency and acts as an agent for cruise ships and others as needed. He is also a stockholder in Truk Trading, a wholesale and retail business, which includes Shigeto's Store and Sokehs Shopping Center in Pohnpei, and which his family controls. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Bank of the FSM. Hashiguchi started his work history with the Chuuk government in 1987 when he got a job with the Department of Marine Resources in a program dealing with Japanese foreign aid programs. Since he was fluent in Japanese, having just attended college in Japan, "the governor put me there to work with the Japanese counterparts," he says. He became deputy director of the department and was then appointed director of the Chuuk State Division of Commerce and Industry. Then, in 1995, weary of the politics involved in government employment, he entered the private sector with his family's business, Shigeto's Store. Five years later, he began working at Truk Transportation. "My family was one of the major stockholders of the company," Hashiguchi says. "But about eight years ago I was able to acquire the biggest portion of stocks." Hashiguchi has a reputation for bold decisiveness and when he was unhappy with the state of the business, he made changes. "With a new management team, [we've been] able to bring it around," he says. "I'm very happy with the management. I have a really great management team [Including] a young manager who started out as a warehouse checker and worked his way up to general manager. I have a good staff right now. The board of directors was also changed and is also very much to Hashiguchi's liking, he says. A few years ago, Hashiguchi gave some attention to Truk Trading "just to bring it around," he says.
