10 Questions with Morrie W. Reiff, CFP, CEO of Planned Asset Management, Encino, Calif.
AmFidelity - Article

Protecting their dwelling should be an unmarried couple's biggest concern, says Morrie Reiff, CFP, with Planned Asset Management in Encino, Calif.
...
Many of Reiff's unmarried clients want their children as their legal heirs.Property, held in joint tenancy with right of survivorship passes to the surviving partner, bypassing other heirs.
Even with tenancy in common, unintended and uncomfortable consequences may arise, Reiff says.
The surviving domestic partner may end up owning property jointly with hostile heirs, who only appeared supportive of the relationship for the sake of the dearly departed.
Reiff's solution?
Use term-life insurance. With sufficient insurance, the surviving partner can buy out the other heirs and retain the home.
