Dr. Sheppard has over 17 years of experience in injury prevention, program direction, management and development; technical assistance; policy analysis; research and data analysis; and conducting focus groups. Since joining PIRE in 1999, Dr. Sheppard has managed and now directs the Children's Safety Network Economics and Data Analysis Resource Center (CSN EDARC). CSN EDARC analyzes national, state and local data to estimate the incidence and costs of childhood and adolescent injury and violence, and conducts cost-benefit analyses of proven interventions such as child safety seats and bicycle helmets. As the director of this national resource center funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Dr. Sheppard provides technical assistance to facilitate legislative, programmatic and policy change to prevent child and adolescent injury. Dr. Sheppard also directs PIRE's Poison Control Technical Assistance Resource Center that is also funded by HRSA. Dr. Sheppard has been instrumental in overseeing the design, construction, and maintenance of the poison control and prevention database, which the Resource Center used as an essential component of its grantee monitoring activities. Dr. Sheppard also provided essential assistance to the nation's poison control centers in the areas of strategic planning, health education and financial stabilization. Dr. Sheppard received her doctorate from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health's Center for Injury Research and Policy. Her doctoral dissertation evaluated state hospital discharge data as a valid surrogate for measuring alcohol- and drug-involvement in youth intentional injury. Prior to her work at PIRE, Dr. Sheppard was the Chief of Staff and Director of Legislative Affairs for the Commissioner of Health for Baltimore City, Maryland. Previously she served as a Baltimore City Health Department program coordinator and as an injury epidemiologist and program coordinator at the Maryland Department of Health, where she conducted car seat safety checks and seat belt usage observations.
