To analyze the SESD effluent outfall system, Mr. Alam used WH (Version 5.0), a computer program for analyzing waterhammer in pumping systems.The magnitude of waterhammer or transient pressure in the force main in the event of pump failure (due to power outage) or pump start-up would depend primarily on the characteristics of the pumps at the SESD pump station.Mr. Alam conducted computer runs for two (2) different scenarios: pump failure scenario and pump start-up scenario.Computer results revealed that pump failure at peak flow rate would cause water-column separation in the SESD outfall pipe with existing total moment of inertia (WR2).The transient results are displayed in terms of maximum and minimum pressures along the outfall system, selected time history plots of pressure and flow, and pump speed.Mr. Alam also specified the maximum positive and negative design pressures that should be used in the stress analysis of 66-inch PCCP pipe and 54-inch cast iron outfall pipe.
