Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman issued a press release Feb. 20 to warn local residents to be wary of callers impersonating sheriff's deputies who are reportedly telling people they are calling in reference to tax returns.
According to the release, "The Jasper County
Sheriff's Office is not a representative of the IRS
or any other dept collector."
said, "I want everyone to know that we are in the business of gathering your belongings and returning them, not depriving you of belongings or money.
If it has something to do with the IRS
or any other debt collector, it will not be us contacting you."
warns that callers have technology that could make the call appear to come from a county office, but that is not the case.
also said the community should be cautious in keeping personal information safe.
