JASPER (KJAS.com and Rayburn Broadcasting Company) -- Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said on Thursday that telephone scammers, who claim to be with the Internal Revenue Service, are heavily targeting residents in the Kirbyville and Buna areas.
According to Newman
, 911 dispatchers say they've received at least forty complaints from citizens on Thursday alone.
said there's no need to report the scammers to his
department, mainly because they are usually in a foreign country, and out of reach of law enforcement in the United States.
said there are three things that you can and should do if you receive one of these calls.
said most importantly, don't give the caller any information about yourself, and don't send them any money.
said the second thing is to just hang up on them.
And, according to Newman
, the third most important thing is to warn your friends and family members about the calls.
Especially elderly people because he
says they are the most vulnerable to falling for one of these scams.
