Sheriff Mitchel Newman
Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman reports a Jasper County resident died in a fire at his mobile home Dec. 13. In a news release, Newman said the body of 59-year-old William Robert Pinkston was recovered from his home at 149 CR 257 in Jasper after the Jasper Fire Department was called out to the residence at about 10:20 p.m. Sunday evening due to a report of a fire. Lake Rayburn Fire Deptartment was called out to assist while firemen used saws and cut away access to the bedroom of the structure as they continued to fight the blaze, reported Newman. Shortly after gaining access, first responders located Pinkston's body. It is believed that he died of smoke inhalation before the fire reached the bedroom. Sheriff Mitchel Newman

JASPER (KJAS.com and Rayburn Broadcasting Company) -- Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said on Thursday that telephone scammers, who claim to be with the Internal Revenue Service, are heavily targeting residents in the Kirbyville and Buna areas.
According to Newman, 911 dispatchers say they've received at least forty complaints from citizens on Thursday alone. Newman said there's no need to report the scammers to his department, mainly because they are usually in a foreign country, and out of reach of law enforcement in the United States. However, Newman said there are three things that you can and should do if you receive one of these calls. Newman said most importantly, don't give the caller any information about yourself, and don't send them any money. Newman said the second thing is to just hang up on them. And, according to Newman, the third most important thing is to warn your friends and family members about the calls. Especially elderly people because he says they are the most vulnerable to falling for one of these scams.
