Minda Howze Barefoot

NASW-NC is excited to announce Minda Howze Barefoot as the winner of the 2009 Presidents' Award. Minda is a graduating MSW student in the UNC-Greensboro and NC A&T University Joint Master's of Social Work (JMSW) Program.
During her graduate studies, Minda has achieved academic excellence by maintaining over a 3.8 grade point average. She was also selected to be a North Carolina Child Welfare Education Collaborative (NC-CWEC) Scholar. As a NC-CWEC Scholar, Minda has taken specialized academic courses and trainings designed to help prepare her as a social worker within the public child welfare system. Minda is dedicated to assisting and strengthening families, and intends to pursue practice within the area of child protective services.
Additionally, Minda has fulfilled several leadership roles during her time as a graduate student. Minda is currently serving as the elected president of the JMSW class. Within this role, Minda has organized monthly meetings and brought speakers and other educational information to the students. She is also currently serving as a member of the Graduation Reception Planning Committee, and is taking the lead role in organizing the Phi Alpha Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Minda also serves as the point-person for students by convening monthly with the directors of the JMSW program to discuss issues or concerns that students have and to ensure resolution.
Minda has been an active and continuous member of NASW since 2006, and has been exceedingly involved with the NC Chapter. From July 2007 to June 2008, Minda served as the Graduate Student Representative for the NASW-NC Board of Directors. As the Graduate Student Rep, she was instrumental in serving as the collective voice of all MSW student members of NASW-NC. She was also able to gain valuable knowledge about NASW-NC, the field of social work, and how a Board functions. This experience taught Minda the importance of NASW and how vital it is to the profession of social work. Before and after serving as a Board member, Minda volunteered as a member of the NASW-NC Student Conference Planning Committee. Minda was responsible for reporting on planning progress to the Board of Directors, contacting panelists to serve on break-out session panels, and organizing parking for students and speakers. She became an integral part in making NASW-NC's first student conference a success.
Minda is also a member of NC-ACTS! (North Carolina-Activating Citizenship Through Service!) Ameri-Corp Program. The NC-ACTS! Ameri-Corp Program is designed to help develop connections between students and the community. Through this program, Minda is striving to attain valuable skills and experiences that will enhance her service as a future social worker in child welfare. Minda believes that she is better prepared as a skilled social worker because of the bonds she has built between her fellow students, the social work community, and her local community.
As Minda's current field liaison in the JMSW program, Maura Busch Nsonwu, PhD, MSW, LCSW says that Minda "manifests a genuine desire to assist others and is always willing to give a helping hand to her community, her peers, and her profession.
The NASW-NC Presidents' Award Committee is honored to recognize Minda Howze Barefoot from the UNC-Greensboro and North Carolina A&T University Joint Master's of Social Work Program as our recipient for the year 2009!
