But according to Mr. Milo Paz Jr., the San Pedro Town Council is wrong on several issues regarding the traffic check by the wardens from Belmopan.Mr. Paz told Ambergris Today that it was the Ambergris Caye Traffic Control Committee (ACTCC), of which the Mayor is a member of, that made the decision to request a traffic check operation for the island, instead of an individual decision made by him as Chairman of the ACTCC (as was written in the press release by the SPTC).Mr. Paz also said that, according to the laws of Belize, the Transport Department does not need any authorization from the SPTC when planning to conduct such an operation on the island, and also does not need to notify the public about traffic checks. However, the town council did know about this coming traffic check and could have informed the public if they wanted to.
"The request for the traffic checks was decided in two previous meetings held by the ACTCC," said Mr. Milo Paz Jr. "The Mayoress was not present during the meetings, but the San Pedro Town Council was certainly informed of the decision. For whatever reason, the Council did not want to cooperate with the operation, but everything was done according to the law."
According to Chairman Milo Paz, the ACTCC decided to bring wardens from Belmopan because these wardens are not familiar with residents of the island and therefore would not be influenced or deterred from doing their job.

Immediately following the installation ceremony, the "gavel" was handed over to the newly inducted San Pedro Lions President Milo Paz Jr.The Lion President graciously accepted his responsibility, and this opportunity to serve his fellow Lions and the community. He then stated his goals: to increase membership by targeting Caye Caulker and the San Pedro business community; to work on fulfilling this year's Lions theme, "Lions serving youth, enhancing the future," and to pick up where the previous president had left off - by continuing the work on the Lions Inter-Community Hospital.

Milo Paz stated the permits were issued from Belmopan and given to Bambi Alpuche and that Mr. Alpuche was issued a directive from Belmopan to give a license for these two taxis.

Mr. Milo Paz stated that he and the mayor had met previously to discuss this matter and that they both were angered and felt that the new minister did not follow the guidelines set in the law and the agreement made with the past minister. The law clearly states that any new permit must first be applied for to the Committee.
...
Mr. Milo Paz then stated the job of the ACTCC is only to approve, disapprove, and make recommendations and that there are currently eight other applications on hold for over a year waiting for taxi permits. These applicants have approached Milo and want explanations of how this could happen. The traffic department, warden and police are responsible for enforcing the laws, therefore it is not the ACTCC's position to give fines or remove the vehicle from the island.Mr. Paz also stated that there have been no communications with the minister and therefore could not give a definitive answer as to whether the vehicles would be allowed to stay or forced to leave.
...
It was then agreed by all to continue to try to contact Minister Coye for a meeting with Mayor Elsa Paz, Milo Paz and Alfonso Wiltshire.
...
It was also agreed that letters should be written in protest of these permits being issued and signed by the four leaders of the taxi associations, the president of the Taxi Federation, Mayor Elsa Paz, Milo Paz, the Chairman of the Board of the ACTCC and Tom Vidrine, president of the Ambergris Caye Chamber of Commerce.
