About FlightTime Radio
Charlie Willwerth and Milford Shirley of FlightTime Radio
Milford Shirley Milford has come to aviation late in life. After finding out that the young next door neighbor was getting his pilot's license Milford was eat up with jealousy to the point that at the age of 44 he began flight training. While training he joined the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association for the opportunity to fellowship with pilots. Once they realized that he wasn't going to go away they made him chapter secretary, then president. Currently he is in partnership with a Cherokee 180, a Starduster Too under construction, and an 80% Complete Midget Mustang is lying neglected in the garage. He has added complex and tailwheel ratings to his license and is currently working on an instrument endorsement. After that the plan is pursue gliders (Gliders, where every landing is an engine out approach!). He says that his biggest aviation thrill so far is getting to ride in EAA's B-17 Aluminum Overcast.
Flight Time Radio Hosts Milford & Charlie | PlaneViz
Listen in as Milford and Charlie, both pilots and airplane owners, discuss the the early days of the radio program, flying, and what's on the horizon.
Dave Goodwin: Today my guests are Milford Shirley and Charlie Willwerth, co-hosts of Flight Time Radio. Milford and Charlie welcome to the program. Milford Shirley: Hey Dave Milford: I guess it was - Charlie, I guess we could blame it on the city council of Jacksonville. Milford: That's correct. Dave: Okay. Charlie: Yeah and Milford was taken up to call us and I had been in aircraft at controller for 22 years and knew a lot about the experimental and home-built aviation. Milford: Actually, Charlie proved to be valuable through the flight because the hardest part of the flight was getting in front of any of the council members and as it turned out we had an incoming member that was taking over the seat of the gentleman and using that loosely, the gentleman that wrote the law against us and the young man that was coming in is basically friends with the family of Charlie so we were actually able to get through to him a little bit and that helped a lot. Milford: God! Milford: No, just after it was over actually. Milford: The red light comes on, it blinds you. Milford: Glider pilot, I'm in a partnership with Cherokee 180 and that thing was just absolute hoot to fly and I placed in about 7 years, I put about 600 hours on that aircraft myself and I'll tell you what, if you're listening to this and you're not a pilot, get down to your local airport and go up on a discovery flight and find out how much fun it can be. Milford: Yes. Milford: Actually what we like to say is that when Charlie's is the one doing the flying, people like to get out of the airplane. Charlie: And it's got quite a download of podcasts, and the Smithsonian has asked us to podcast from their facility for the past, what 4 or 5 years Milford? Milford: Oh, yeah, that's been 4 years in a row they've asked us back every year, so we're amazed every time they do it and we're just very grateful. Milford: Yes. The one out at Dulles. Milford: Let me tell you what, we come from so many places. Milford: Yes. Milford: Well I don't have a coherent understanding of the past. Milford: That's correct. Milford: We've had a couple of people that have really been with us from the beginning, locally, of course they don't care about the worldwide downloads but the Sterling Flight training, that's actually where I did my training years ago. They've been with us since the getgo. Milford: And actually, if you just want to - some people don't like to download things - you can go to our website and just click on one of our old shows and it'll just pop up, start playing. Milford: Yes sir. Milford: Oh absolutely. Milford: You know, not sure about Charlie but I'm the world's worst about really making hard plans.
