It was last updated 17 years ago, when then President Mikell Pinkney established the Black Theatre Network Integrated System (BTNis) that expanded on Anderson's work.
leadership BTN also presented reports on HBCUs and Black Theatre companies, as well as listing their seasons in the newly established publication, BTNews
That was also the first conference that Mikell Pinkney
, my partner, planned and the first conference program that I designed for BTN
(I have now designed 12).
was himself a first of sorts.
When Inacent Black opened at New York's Biltmore (now the Samuel J. Friedman) Theatre in 1981, he
became the youngest African American to direct for the Broadway stage.
Conference 95 produced many firsts for BTN
The first BTN National Auditions-which evolved into StudentQuest; the first BTN Auction of Theatre Memorabilia (this past year's the BTN Garage Sale); and the first organized Salute to the Ascendants Ceremony all started at conference '95.
All three events remain prominent and now standard parts of BTN conferences, and they have become part of Pinkney's BTN legacy.
In 1996, he also became the first non-founding member to become president of BTN.
Both were directed by Mikell Pinkney and both featured BTN 5th President, Lundeana Thomas, in their casts.
