Music Minister Mike Tucker and special guests will be in concert Friday beginning at 7 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2701 Reid St., Palatka, next to McDonald's.
Mike Tucker can remember as a child watching his mother singing spirituals as she did her daily chores. Tucker will be featured singer on Friday at 7 p.m. at the church at 2701 Reid St., Palatka, across from McDonald's. Admission is one nonperishable food item that will go into Thanksgiving baskets the church is providing for local needy families. A reception will follow and the public is invited. A nursery will be provided. According to Tucker, he plans to add a few spiritual songs to the concert as a tribute to his mother, Melva, who died in January 2002. "My mom was an incredible Christian woman," he said. "Music has always been a part of my life," said Tucker, who lives in Hastings. For Tucker, getting to know his dad and to learn to appreciate him was a long time coming. "I never knew him until I was grown," he said. "I lived with him, but he worked 60 hours a week and drove back and forth to Jacksonville plus pastoring a church. At the time, I resented the church because a lot of times I would want my dad, but he was involved in church work." Tucker said he will share some of his testimony during Friday's concert, including the part about being thankful for another chance with his father and finding out what an awesome man he was. "He fought a lot of demons in his life after serving in WWII that he never would talk about," he said. "My father was rock solid in a lot of ways as far as responsibilities. He taught me to be a man in this world, pay your bills and do what you say you're going to do. He would preach Jesus in the hospital or wherever he was." Joining Tucker on the stage will be some special guests who had an important impact on his life. Judy Sweat will accompany Tucker on the piano. "It took me 63 years to do a concert," he said. Tucker graduated in 1969 from Palatka High School and then St. Johns River Community College. He began his music ministry as a high school junior leading music and directing the choir at Hillcrest Baptist Church along with friend and sophomore Gerald Smith playing the piano. He served in that capacity for three or four years before he said he backslid into a spiritual wilderness. Tucker said that's when the Holy Spirit started dealing with him about his condition. "I recommitted my life to Christ soon after that and ever since then I've tried to serve Him," he said. Tucker has had several musical highlights in his life, too. He played Bellamy in the production of "The Fantasticks" while in college and also traveled to the North Carolina Fine Arts Festival in Franklin to perform the play. Also under Humphrey and his wife, Patty's direction, Tucker played the part of Judas in the rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Tucker worked various jobs throughout his working career, including retiring in 2013 with 15 years of service with the Putnam County School District -- the last seven of those at Browning-Pearce Elementary in San Mateo where he was a custodian. "Normally, the offering would go to Mike, but he requested that it not be given to him, but be applied to one of our many missions we support," she said. For Tucker, to sing is to worship. "I generally tune everything out but the song and my Lord," he said. "To think that I have the privilege to sing for, to and about my Savior and Lord Jesus Christ is all the inspiration I need." Tucker said he wants Friday's concert to be about lifting up the name of the Lord. "I just want it to be about Him," he said. "I really want people not to see me or the others there, but come away having met Him." As Tucker is preparing for Friday's concert, he is reminded of watching his Mama sing and the impact it had on him and others. "When she sang, the spirit of the Lord was all over her and the song," he said. "She never sang that I didn't cry. The spirit of the Lord was so overwhelming it would bring you to tears. I know it wasn't just me; it was everybody in her presence when she sang." Tucker believes that music plays an important part in worship. "God mentions music or musical instruments many times in the Bible," he said.
