Mike Stalnecker, chief of North End Fire Company, Pine Grove, said the department responded to a call for a fire Saturday in a hay field in Washington Township.
Pine Grove Hose Hook & Ladder Fire Company No. 1 also responded, he said. Dumped ashes burned about an acre and a half of the field, he said Monday. As for the fire in Washington Township, Stalnecker said the homeowner looked out the window about noon and noticed what he thought was a large shadow but realized it was a fire after he saw flames. The area was on a hill and gets a lot of sunlight, so there was very little snow, he said. "The wind had it fanned pretty good," Stalnecker said, adding the homeowner tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire. The fire was contained in a matter of minutes, he said.

Fire Chief Mike Stalnecker was in attendance and was questioned whether the fire company ever uses the dam.
According to Stalnecker, in his 27 years of affiliation with the fire company, the North End fire department had never found it necessary to go there for water. "We're blessed in this area with water," he said, "I wouldn't consider it from my point of view." - Stalnecker reported the North End Fire Company had responded to 10 calls during June, seven in the borough, two in Washington Township, and one in Tremont borough. According to Stalnecker, everything in the company is operating in top condition. Upon questioning, he noted that the fire company would not be holding a carnival this year. - Resident Judy Fickinger's effort to bring a farmer's market to the borough was unsuccessful. Only one of the vendors she contacted was interested.
