Mike Rosebush has spent more than two decades advocating for the discredited therapeutic practice that aims to turn gay people straight. He's now the head of the cadet counseling program at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
John Aravosis at AmericaBlog broke the news today that the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., had hired Mike Rosebush, Ph.D, to serve as the chief of character and leadership coaching at the academy.
Rosebush has spent the past two decades "helping" other men "overcome" their homosexual desires.
Rosebush is also a former vice president of the antigay organization Focus on the Family, which has its headquarters in Colorado Springs, just a few miles from the academy's entry gate.
Rosebush's "ex-gay" ties extend back to at least 1995, reports Aravosis, noting that Rosebush served as director of the professional counselors' network for the now-defunct Exodus International, which was, until its shuttering and "rebranding" earlier this year, the nation's most vocal supporter of "reparative therapy. Rosebush also co-authored a "handbook" on "Therapy for Unwanted Homosexual Attractions" with disgraced former researcher George Rekers and NARTH founder Joseph Nicolosi.
"Hiring a counselor like Dr. Rosebush sends a message that perhaps the Air Force Academy isn't serious about creating an environment where all cadets are treated equally."
"The fact that Dr. Rosebush has so little regard for best practices on issues of human sexuality and so-called reparative therapy begs the question - how can any cadets trust such a man to be on their side when that man has proven over the course of his career that his ideology always comes before his clients' needs?"

That book, Sanctification Coaching: Sexual Purity and Peace for Christian Men with Same-Sex Attractions, was self-published under the Xulon imprint for Christian books by Dr. Mike Rosebush in 2009. That's the same year the academy hired the former Focus on the Family vice president to work in its "plans and programs directorate," which develops institutional policy, plans and assessment strategies for commanders.
It's also the same year the American Psychological Association debunked conversion or "reparative" therapy, saying not only that it's unproven, but that it can cause depression and suicidal thoughts.
In 2011, Rosebush transferred to the academy's Center for Character and Leadership Development. The academy defends his continued presence, noting one of the programs he's designed won the Jon C. Dalton Institute's Best Practice Award for "outstanding practice ... relevant to the field of college student character and values development. And the academy adds via email that Rosebush - who declined to be interviewed for this story - doesn't work directly with cadets.
Dealing with 'sga'
Rosebush has actually spent a good share of his career at the academy. After graduating from there in 1975, he taught a core psychology course on campus from 1982 to 1985, the academy says via email. In 1989, he completed a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of North Carolina, which included a dissertation titled, "Behavioral observation scale for a subordinate appraisal of supervisory performance at the U.S. Air Force Academy."
He then returned to the academy from 1988 to 1992, teaching courses on leadership and marriage and family. He was named an "outstanding instructor" during that time, the academy reports.
In 1990, he became a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado; he would often practice over the phone. In 1995, he retired from the military and joined Focus on the Family, the Colorado Springs-based Christian organization notorious for LGBT intolerance.
During 10 years there, he was a vice president and directed a college program in the Focus on the Family Institute, according to biographies issued by the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuals (NARTH) and the website
A bio used in 2012 by NARTH, a faith-based group that claims to help those with unwanted same-sex attractions, said Rosebush served as president of Coaching Confidant, "a counseling ministry for Christian men who struggle with unwanted same-gender attractions (sga) and/or sexual addiction. NARTH also noted Rosebush had "successfully dealt with his own sga. He also oversaw qualifications and training of "Exodus International-approved counsellors," and coordinated Exodus' counseling ministry with other Christian and secular organizations worldwide.
Rosebush left Focus in 2005 and published Sanctification Coaching in 2009.
Rosebush's working at the academy raises questions for Marsha McDonough, a psychologist in Austin, Texas, who co-authored a chapter in the ethics section of the 2012 Handbook of LGBT-Affirmative Couple and Family Therapy.
Rosebush's telephone conferencing for conversion therapy is unethical and it's not scientifically supported and not supported by any mental health association. (See "Out of the mainstream," below.)
"But that's not indicated by the hiring of Rosebush."
Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, calls hiring Rosebush "a total scandal and outrage.
"It's not just a matter of someone who has strong religious beliefs teaching at the Air Force Academy, but many of the beliefs held by Dr. Rosebush are actively harmful to a number of people and to LGBT cadets specifically."
Dr. Mike Rosebush's philosophy that same-sex attractions must be controlled and reversed runs contrary to mainstream mental health treatment.

Last month, the world learned that ..., 8 Feb 2014 [cached]
Last month, the world learned that the Academy is employing Dr. Mike Rosebush, an Academy grad and allegedly "ex-gay" fundamentalist Christian whose entire professional career has been geared toward "curing homosexuality," fighting "unwanted same-sex attractions" among Christian men "acting upon their homoerotic temptations.
Well, according to the Air Force's own Global Address List, Rosebush is "Chief, Coaching Development" at the Academy's much vaunted and revered "Center for Character and Leadership Development. Meaning that Rosebush's "work" - and the mind clearly boggles here - sets the standard for what constitutes leaders within the Air Force Academy, specifically, and the United States Air Force, generally.
USAFA attempted to ridiculously counter this shocking news about Rosebush by essentially exhorting the public not to fear the possibility of any harm here.
The Academy vociferously vouchsafed that Rosebush was absolutely NOT having ANY impact upon the "character and leadership development" of any cadets whatsoever.
After all, Rosebush is a senior official at the Academy's "Center for Character and Leadership Development.
With great shock and an enormous sense of disgust, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) has been informed of the notorious anti-gay bigot Dr. Mike Rosebush's employment at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA).
Rosebush has devoted his entire professional career to the bullying and harassment of the LGBTQ community, carried out under the highly dubious guise of "curing homosexuality," a sexual orientation that he likens to "addiction" and disease. Rosebush is a former vice president of the rabidly fundamentalist Christian, Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family, one of the foremost anti-gay organizations in the country.
Additionally, Rosebush has also been a clinical member of NARTH (the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality).
According to the promotional materials for his book "Sanctification Coaching," Rosebush is an "expert" on fighting "unwanted same-sex attractions" among Christian men "acting upon their homoerotic temptations. The man has gained fame and notoriety by taking insipid quack science to ever-lower depths of absurdity. Indeed, the American Psychological Association (APA), in its "Resolution on Appropriate Affirmative Responses to Sexual Orientation Distress and Change Efforts," has taken great pains to underscore such "therapy" as merely the expression of prejudice and discrimination, with a basis in ignorance and the distortion or active disdain of scientific data. Even Exodus International, the organization for which Rosebush served as Professional Counselors' Network director, has publicly apologized for the harm caused by the espousal of the patently false notion that homosexuals can be "cured."
Implausibly, Rosebush now finds his employment at the United States Air Force Academy. Reporter Pam Zubeck, writing for the Colorado Springs Independent on a story about Rosebush, interviewed MRFF just a few days ago.
In that interview, Ms. Zubeck informed MRFF that Rosebush was hired at the Academy in 2009 to work in the Academy's "plans and programs directorate," which develops institutional policy, plans, and assessment strategies for commanders.
Mike Rosebush has absolutely no place in the hallowed halls of our military service academies.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation demands that USAFA exercises its responsibility towards the civil rights and protections of cadets, staff, and faculty, and immediately terminate the employment of "ex-gay" fraudster Dr. Mike Rosebush.
