Students at a San Diego County school observe one of nature's cycles through an ECO-CYCLE kit. The kits are from the Escondido-based nonprofit ECOLIFE. Photo by Mike Ready
The idea behind the kits initially was to try and reach as many people as possible, explained Mike Ready, ECOLIFE's aquaponics program manager. Even as aquaponics has been around for a very long time, Ready said they realized it would be difficult to convert people that were already involved in the traditional methods of farming.

Michael Ready
Michael Ready is a nature photographer based in San Diego, California. Toward that effort, Ready is an Associate Member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (www.ilcp.com) -- a group using awe-inspiring photography to further environmental and cultural conservation. Through this group his work is being used directly in conservation projects and outreach. His field expeditions have taken him to locales around the world, including the Amazon Basin, Central America, Southeast Asia, and Japan, where he was honored to swim in mountain streams with giant salamanders as old as he. Though he has traveled to remote and exotic destinations, he still finds intrigue and inspiration in the details of an ochre sea star or a colony of California harvester ants.
