PHOENIX (November 18, 2008) -- PGA golf professional Jack Bartko, legendary golf superintendent Mike Pock and illustrious golf writer Jack Rickard have been selected as the 2008 inductees into the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame that will take place on Monday, Nov. 24 at Gainey Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale.

Mike Pock, 62, of New River, and his family have a long and storied history in the Arizona Golf industry. Millions of golfers throughout the world have benefited from their love for this grand game as they have tended to some of the finest golf courses around the globe.
Pock grew up under the tutelage of his grandfather Jay D. Woodward (Arizona Golf Hall of Fame 2000) the patriarch of the family and famed superintendant who was building the second nine holes at Arizona Country Club the year Mike was born in 1946. Pock grew up under the tutelage of his grandfather Jay D. Woodward (Arizona Golf Hall of Fame 2000) the patriarch of the family and famed superintendant who was building the second nine holes at Arizona Country Club the year Mike was born in 1946.

"Being selected for the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame is certainly an honor," Pock said. "I grew up with golf since its infancy in the state in Arizona. My grandfather won every award out there and to follow in his footsteps, in an industry we love is truly rewarding."
Pock began his career by helping his grandfather build the famed Desert Forest Golf Club and remembers him saying, "listen to the grass, it will tell you what it needs. When Desert Forest was initially built it was grown in with rye grass. The following year, at the age of 15, Pock began his official career in the golf course construction business. He helped with the re-construction and conversion to Bermuda grass, tending to the 10th and 11th fairways.
In 1961 after two years of college, he joined the service and was sent to Vietnam. He finished his tour of duty in San Diego and moved back to Phoenix in 1970 to continue his career with his grandfather. Soon after, the developers of Fountain of the Sun Golf Club offered him the position of golf course superintendent, and he was asked to oversee construction of their second nine holes.
In the early 1970's Jerry Nelson chose Pock as superintendent for the construction of Pinnacle Peak Country Club. From there, it was on to Troon Country Club and Troon North. Following the creation of these famed courses; Pock took a brief respite from golf when he left the business to pursue a career as a cowboy.
Briarwood Country Club called in 1990 and Pock returned to his first love.

But it wasn't a total loss, Cochran pointed out, as his good friend, Mike Pock, already had been named as the original superintendent at PPCC. (Yes, the same Mike Pock who is a member of the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame.)

"I remember Mike was excited about it, and he got me excited about it, and so I got a letter of recommendation from a guy back at our club back in El Paso named Lee Trevino,'' chuckled Cochran about his connection to the "Merry Mex.''
