Gleneagle secondary teacher Mike McElgunn
The event, being held next Wednesday at Coquitlam's Gleneagle secondary school, is being organized by Gleneagle teachers Mike McElgunn and Jodey Udell in an effort to bring post-secondary representatives to graduating students directly. "Events like this are usually geared for academics, not specifically for the arts," said McElgunn, Gleneagle's fine arts department head, adding, "Now is the time for senior students to consider what opportunities are available and to get their portfolios ready… Some schools are now accepting for early admissions." McElgunn, an award-winning arts educator, said there are many post-secondary arts programs that are new or not well known. And he said Metro Vancouver has become a hub for people making a living in the arts, especially in the film and animation fields. He said he's pleased with the number of institutions that have signed up to make presentations - so much so that he has extended invitations to attend to arts students in New Westminster, Burnaby and Maple Ridge. • SD43's post-secondary arts night is Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gleneagle secondary school (1195 Lansdowne Dr.). Participants can choose up to three sessions to attend at 7 , 7:45 and 8:30 p.m. For more information, email Mike McElgunn at mmcelgunn@sd43.bc.ca.

In a letter to NDP MLAs, for example, Gleneagle art teacher Mike McElgunn wrote that Bill 22 does nothing to address issues in his classroom, where nine of 24 students have learning issues, including students with depression who can't complete classroom projects and another with a head injury that results in short-term memory loss, personality issues and attendance issues.
"This is a classroom situation that was deemed appropriate for educational purposes in our 'consultation' meeting," McElgunn wrote in a letter published in the CTA newsletter.
