"This class, they've set the bar in every category, not just statistically, but how to play, how to enjoy the game and how to enjoy each other," coach Mike Hamacher said of his Brickies juniors.
When Hamacher was hired as the head coach at Hobart six years ago, this group was in the fifth grade, and coaches were sent past the middle school level to the elementary schools to start teaching the kind of basketball that would be played years and years later.
"They all love the game so much that they understand that if somebody's going to be jealous of them and don't put in half the time that they do, they don't care what other people think," Hamacher

"It's a conflict of interest at the very least," said Hobart coach Mike Hamacher, who said he's lost between 20-30 kids in his eight years in Brickieland.
"When club coaches are in your building they can influence girls to do what they want them to do," Hamacher
believes athletes all around the area are influenced by club coaches to stop playing high school basketball.

Hamacher takes over at Hobart
Girls basketball coach has directed JV teams at Merrillville, Griffith.
has been waiting a while for this.After spending a few years coaching at the middle school and junior varsity levels, Hamacher got his first varsity coaching job Wednesday when it was announced that he will be the new varsity girls basketball coach at Hobart.
"I'm very excited," Hamacher
said."It's something I've been dreaming about ... ever since I started coaching basketball, really."
A 1992 Highland graduate, Hamacher
has been working his
way up the coaching ladder for the past six years.He started out as a seventh-grade boys and girls coach in Merrillville, then spent one year as the junior varsity coach there.For the last two years, he's been the JV coach at Griffith.Now, he gets his first shot at the next level, and he's looking forward to working with a Brickies team that loses just two seniors from this past season's team.
"I think this team can be competitive from day one," Hamacher
said."I don't see why we couldn't compete for both (conference and sectional titles) this year."
Hamacher plans to meet up with his
new team for workouts next week.It shouldn't take too long to get acquainted.
"We've played against them every year that I've been a JV coach," he
said."I'm pretty familiar with the roster. ... (but) I think it's pretty imperative that we get started here over the summer as soon as possible."In addition to coaching, Hamacher will teach sociology and U.S. history at Hobart.
