Producers aren't the only ones under sharp federal scrutiny, said Mike Graeff, longtime Vancouver pharmacist.
"The DEA controls the production of pain medication on a national basis, monitoring all levels of dispensing and prescribing," said Graeff, owner of Mike's Eastside Drugs and Homecare Equipment.
"They look at a pharmacy, and if it exceeds the amount, you're red-flagged.
You have to explain why it's peaking."

"If they weren't our patients, we haven't been able take care of them," Graeff

Mike Graeff took that philosophy in an interesting direction as a longtime Vancouver pharmacist.
He helped some families have children.
As owner of Mike's Eastside Drugs and Healthcare Equipment, he had a compounding pharmacy practice.
Sometimes their doctors would direct them to Graeff's
pharmacy for a special hormone formulation.
"It's a prescription item.
On this hormone, they've been able to go full term and deliver," Graeff
"The unique compounding aspect of the pharmacy allowed them to have children."
And the proud parents often would share that news with Graeff
"They would come in and bring in their babies and show them to us," Graeff
"They liked to thank us for our part in helping them have children.
