Miguel G. Belmonte , president and CEO of the Star Group of newspapers said , We decided on the Polaris CTP System because of its top quality reproduction and potential savings in time.Furthermore , we have had good experience with our Agfa imagesetter , both with the equipment and the after sale service.
The Philippine Star is among the top three broadsheets in the Philippines today. Its production facility is located in Metro Manila and has a nationwide daily circulation of 220 , 000 copies. As producer of The Philippine Star and sister publication , tabloid Pilipino Star Ngayon with a circulation of over 200 , 000 a day , Belmonte looked for ways to upgrade the facilities , increase their production capacity and at the same time improve the printing capability and quality.
The Polaris 100E was installed in November and after testing and calibration the Polaris was put into production for The Philippine Star by mid-December.With the ease of the new workflow , the computer-to-plate production team was outputting plates even during the training period.By January 2001 , almost 70 % of the plates were being made using the Polaris system.
According to Ferdie Pajarillo , prepress manager , the team encountered some difficulty with their new system. We had to reorient each newspaper section on how to send us the correct file format.
In fact , they were there throughout the entire process of pre-installation , installation , training and technical support , said Belmonte.
Belmonte added that the improvement has been noted by both our advertisers and our readers , this has made the investment worthwhile for The Star..Today , more than 80 % of the production plates for the Philippine Star and almost all the colour advertisements are output using the Polaris.Digital-plate output is approximately 100 panorama plates per day.The Agfa imagesetters are still being used for film output and as a back-up system , but they look forward to the day that they will be completely CTP based.A second unit maybe considered in the near future.
The Agfa Polaris system was sold and installed by the Graphics Imaging Division of Photokina Marketing Corporation , Agfa's exclusive dealer in the Philippines.
Kudos to The Freeman merger with The Star!, 1 Aug 2004 [cached]
Both parties, Philippine Star President Miguel Belmonte and The Freeman Chairman Sir Jose "Dodong" Gullas long ago saw that this partnership would be good for both newspapers especially in these days when competition is tight.
What took long was really the issue of who would control, as both parties just wanted a 50-50 stake in the paper with no one trying to wrest control from the other. But somehow this problem has been solved and The Freeman begins another phase of its life as a member of The Star group of companies.Yes, it goes without saying that Miguel Belmonte would now have full control of The Freeman, though it doesn't mean that Sir Dodong will be out of it.
Both Max and Betty Go Belmonte (the mother of Miguel) launched the Philippine Star and I never thought for a moment back then that I would be a part of it.
A couple of years as a The Freeman columnist, it was Max Soliven's turn to tell me that the time was ripe for me to write a column in the Star and Max's nod wasn't enough, I had to be interviewed by Betty Go Belmonte herself who advised me to just write the truth and keep a good name to protect The Star.
