Mick Halsall Professional Lead Coach

Mick Halsall made the short trip across the Black Country to join Wolves in the summer of 2009 after a hugely successful decade bringing a host of young players through the ranks at Walsall, including Matty Fryatt and Scott Dann.
...
Born in Bootle in Merseyside, as a player Mick stacked up almost 400 appearances with Birmingham, Carlisle, Grimsby and Peterborough. Having become something of a legend at Peterborough even before captaining the side to Division Three play-off success in 1992, he also later managed the club before joining Walsall during the 1998/99 season. For much of the decade he has been the Saddlers' Head of Youth development, but as well as the spells in caretaker charge he has also worked as first team coach. In February, 2012, following a staffing reshuffle, Mick also took on reserve team duties as Development Coach, a role he was set to fulfil until the end of the season.

The day the youth system died...

After 11 years of great success, the loss of Mick Halsall to Wolverhampton Wanderers was the final straw. This is my insight into a set up which started at Walsall, and finished with Sweden and ex England's Sven Goran Eriksson at Notts County.

The story as I know it rolls back to 2006. I had recently joined up with Walsall as a youth scout after I successfully completed my coaching badge and had a good amount of success in guiding my school teams through competitions. It was then that I encountered Mick for the first time. Obviously as a supporter of many years, the name Mick Halsall was synonymous with our young talent. He had done several stints on the sidelines as assistant coach with the first team, but was largely known amongst the faithful for his work in turning our youth team into one of the hottest products that the region had seen.
...
All there partly because of Halsall.
Mick is an inspirational character. He led the centre of excellence in his own mould, and every single coach who worked for him was there because they simply wanted to do it for Mick and the lads. I used to go down there every Thursday night. Not because I had to, but because I always left feeling really good and I learnt a lot from simply observing. Every session at that centre was vibrant, lively and full of skill, and Mick was the heartbeat of it all. The coaches knew what the expectations were, and they delivered. When it wasn't quite right, Mick would step in with all the professionalism you would expect, quietly putting it right and moving on.
However Mick knew that without a good team out there scouring the suburbs, he would be very light on new blood coming in. He treated his scouting team like old friends, he was always on the phone, asking us if we would go here, and 'would you mind going over there' to see a player he has had a tip off about. He TRUSTED us, and that trust was repaid with some damn good gems being unearthed.
...
Then again, while Mick was there, money wasn't really the object. You wanted to do it for the Centre and for him. I would go to all parts of Walsall dutifully every Sunday. I've watched games in Leamore, Pleck, Hednesford, Great Barr, Cannock, Bloxwich. Walsall don't like paying for things. Mick was always apologetic about it, but it wasn't his fault. At the start of every new season, we could get first dibs on the oversize kit left over from the previous year and it would be a chance to see who could best shrink that XXL tracksuit to fit! He always managed to convince the management to lay on a table at a Sporting Dinner once a year though.
...
One opened for me in November 2007, when Mick announced that he was bringing in a company to open up two development centres for Walsall in the northern West Midlands area.
...
Mick was obviously tied up at the Centre on a Thursday, so his presence was excused, but hot a single member of staff visited us at Alumwell to see how we were progressing.
...
On the 15th January of that year we heard Mick had handed in his resignation, with Stoke seemingly the likely suitors. It turned out though that Stoke had offered what turned out to be a derisory offer, and Mick decided that he was better off staying put for the time being. We knew the end was nigh, and it was no great surprise when in July, Mick finally left for Wolves, who had courted him for quite some time to join their youth development team.
...
A couple had resigned their passes in the week after Mick left, but I was still there.
