They are part of an initiative led by English teacher and poet Michelle Brown to develop a visible literary culture beyond the classroom at NMH.
Josh Edwards (shown) and his wife Lynn Xu do amazing work "building their lives as a poem," says Brown, and run the independent press Canarium Books, which publishes poetry by established and emerging authors from the United States and abroad. Brown says Cathy Linh Che's poems "speak to historical memory, to the immigrant experience, to nuances of trauma, and to Asian-American identity in ways that are vivid and heartbreaking and profound and accessible. The visiting poets come to NMH classes, read or give lectures, lead workshops, and hang out with students, "providing accessible opportunities to interact with literature in ways that are relevant to their lives," according to Brown.
