Michael Smyth is a member of the Legal Services Board. He was for twenty years a partner at Clifford Chance, where he was head of the government practice. He is a visiting professor at Queen Mary University of London and at the University of Essex. He is author of Business and the Human Rights Act and joint author of the Law of Political Donations. He has a number of non-executive roles and was previously a member of the Press Complaints Commission. He chairs two charities: Community Links and Law for Life: the Foundation for Public Legal Education.
He was awarded the CBE in 2009 for services to legal pro bono work and made Queen's Counsel honoris causa in 2014 for his wider contribution to the legal profession.
