The 12-inch water main broke at about 3 a.m., according to Michael Spiker, director of utilities for the City of Hagerstown Utilities Department.
The running water from the water main created a sinkhole in the street, Spiker said. Workers shut down the water main when they arrived Monday. Repairing the water main will require more excavation in the street, according to Spiker.
