Rocky Point Schools--Dealing With Trauma
www.rockypointschools.org, 21 Dec 2004 [cached]
The 33-year-old ambulance belonged to Michael Proios, a special education teacher at Rocky Point Junior-Senior High School on Long Island. The schools assembled 520 packages by giving each grade an assignment: seventh--toothpaste; ninth--wash clothes, etc. Each included a note from a senior girl, telling recipients "it makes me proud to see people waiting hours to donate blood or . . . workers wishing to remain on duty after their shift is over."
"It's a community outpouring of love," said Proios, the teacher.

Michael Proios, 47, a special-education teacher at Rocky Point Junior-Senior High School, drove his 1968 Mercedes-Benz Unimog - a former military vehicle in Belgium that he restored - to ground zero Saturday and delivered 427 bags of supplies, donated and packed by students, to the rescue workers dealing with the aftermath of Tuesday's terrorist attack.
As a school project, Proios asked students to collect various items, including toothbrushes, soap, deodorant and washcloths to drop off to rescue workers.
Students jumped at the opportunity to do their share and less than 24 hours after Proios made the request, students packed their school with piles of care packages.
After receiving special clearance from city officials, Proios and Rocky Point volunteer firefighter Bob Inga drove the truck to Chambers Street at the heart of rescue efforts.
...
Within seconds of arriving, Proios said dozens of firefighters rushed his truck - many of them immediately making use of the items.
"One guy took the deodorant and said, 'My God, I've been looking for deodorant for three days,'" Proios said.

On Friday, September 14, Mr. James Gerardi our District Superintendent was present when the high school students and faculty and staff loaded the Project Comfort boxes into teacher Mike Proios's truck.
...
Mr. Proios decided to use his military vehicle (Unimog) to get the boxes as close to the rescue workers as possible at ground zero.
...
Upon arriving in New York City, Mr. Proios and his Unimog were able to get through to the last check point due to the nature of the vehicle and the fact that volunteer Rocky Point Fireman Robert Inga accompanied him. They were 100 feet from the entrance to ground zero. Our Project Comfort packages were the first items the rescue workers saw as they walked on by to the lavatories and food stands.
Below are photos taken by Mr. Proios.

Their faces are young and innocent , their voices sometimes halting , but when students at Rushmore Elementary School in Carle Place read the letters they've penned to rescue workers at the World Trade Center , their words express sentiments deeper and wiser than their years.
Dear Rescue Worker , wrote fifth-grader Hadeel Khaled , If you weren't here the world would be gone. You've saved the world..
