Speaker, Michael Obel-Omia ...

Speaker, Michael Obel-Omia challenged our community to risk becoming your best to gain understanding and awareness. Obel-Omia, former faculty member, spoke in chapel and ran a workshop for Black History Month on February 11. He encouraged our community to use our mission to be positive, proactive, and thoughtful leaders.

Michael C. Obel-Omia, a former faculty member and an educator for almost 30 years, has served a number of communities as a teacher, a coach, an advisor, and as an administrator, including serving as the second Head of School of the Paul Cuffee School, a public charter school in Providence and the interim Head of School at the Compass School another public charter school in Rhode Island. At present, he is the Assistant Head of School at the Cambridge Friends School, the only Quaker School in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Throughout his adult life, service to community, providing access, and connection to the arts have enjoyed predominance.
While living in Boston and teaching at the Roxbury Latin School, Michael served on local independent school boards, such as Tenacre, The Learning Project, and Fenn School, and also on his alma mater's Board of Trustees, Middlebury College. In addition, Michael has served on the Board of the Robert F. Kennedy Children's Action Corps, which enabled him to participate in a 100 miles cycling ride each year in order to raise funds for the organization. Since 1997, he has raised over $100,000 via the yearly ride for children in distress. In Cleveland, where Michael served as the Head of the Upper School at University School, he began cycling in the Pan-Mass Challenge, as a means of raising funds for cancer research and reconnecting to the Red Sox and New England. In addition, he cycled across country as a part of a relay team to raise funds for and awareness of Nets for Life, a project that provides mosquito netting in developing countries in Africa.
In Providence, Michael helped Paul Cuffee School reach its zenith in terms of New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) scores and Financial Sustainability during his tenure. Michael now serves on the WaterFire Board. An essayist, he has been published in the Providence Journal, Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Independent School, on NPR, and has spoken at more than 50 schools on issues of social justice, service, and compassion. - Michael Obel-Omia, Head of School, Paul Cuffee

A PARENT DONATED THE FUNDS TO CREATE THREE TRASH CANS FOR INSIDE THE SCHOOL, ONE FOR THE BUS STOP AND TO DECORATE TWO IN THE PARKING LOT. I BUILT THE CANS AND THE TEENAGERS DESIGNED THE PICTURES USING PHRASES THAT THEY ALSO BRAINSTORMED. THEY PROJECTED THE IMAGES ONTO THE CAN SURFACES, THEN PAINTED THEM.
