Michael McCormick, Minneapolis Office, is receiving a Scales of Justice Award for his ongoing work for the American Refugee Committee and his recent leadership in nonprofit review projects.
A top priority for Michael when he came to Dorsey in 2005 was making sure he could continue his pro bono work for the American Refugee Committee (ARC). Michael serves as their General Counsel and is on their board of directors. ARC is a nonprofit that works with its partners and constituencies to provide opportunities and expertise to refugees, displaced people and host communities. ARC helps people survive conflict and crisis and rebuild lives of dignity, health, security and self-sufficiency. ARC is committed to the delivery of programs that ensure measurable quality and lasting impact for the people it serves. Michael’s dedication to this organization has been a great addition to our pro bono program. Michael regularly receives interesting legal questions from ARC and Michael is great about reaching out to others across the firm to involve them in this fascinating work. Michael is quick to take young associates under his wing and to involve them in every aspect of a project. Michael’s dedication to pro bono work is infectious and he is a great ambassador for our pro bono program. Michael’s work is also a great testament to the fact that pro bono work is not just for litigators! In addition to Michael’s long-standing and ongoing work for ARC, Michael has played a key role in growing the firm’s nonprofit review projects. In 2010, Michael led a team of lawyers that provided a nonprofit review for the Advocates for Human Rights. The Advocates for Human Rights is a nonprofit that helps individuals fully realize their human rights in the United States and around the world. For over 25 years, The Advocates’ innovative programming has touched the lives of refugees and immigrants, women, ethnic and religious minorities, children, and other marginalized communities whose rights are at risk. The Advocates strengthens accountability mechanisms, raises awareness, and fosters tolerance. Adapting traditional human rights methodologies to conduct cutting-edge research, The Advocates has produced 75 reports documenting human rights practices in 25 countries. Michael led a team of four associates and five partners, and across four departments, that helped the Advocates review their internal governance documents, structure, and other transactional legal issues. Michael is currently leading a nonprofit review project that is being staffed primarily by lawyers from our client UnitedHealth Group. Michael and other Dorsey lawyers are serving as a resource to the UHG team that is providing a nonprofit review for a different “ARC†organization. Michael T. McCormick
