In an interview Friday, Hopkins County Memorial Hospital CEO Michael McAndrew said the organizations were close to completing a partnership agreement.
He said the hospital began seeking a partner after deciding several years ago that small, independent rural hospitals would not survive in the atmosphere of declining reimbursements for service, a push for "population health management" designed to keep people healthy instead of waiting to heal them after they're sick and other pressures. Joining with a larger organization provides new resources for smaller hospitals. "Everybody really is in the same boat," McAndrew said. "The government has basically been reducing reimbursements, saying 'you guys have to do this better.' " There's been a lot of turmoil and change in the industry, he said. "I think when we get to the other side, it will be good. It's just painful going through the process," McAndrew said.
