Mike Marasco
Mike understands the classic entrepreneur's biggest challenge: having enough funding, whether it's a recent college graduate launching a new business or someone in an established company with a great idea but not a lot of internal support. Working both sides, Mike not only connects people and their ideas to investors but comes up with ways for entrepreneurs to bootstrap and develop an idea with little or no capital.
Mike is the driving force behind the top ranked-along with MIT and Stanford-Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (FCEI) at Northwestern University. His students have gone on to run multi-million dollar start-ups, creating their successful ideas under his guidance and the team at FCEI. Mike's particular area of interest is the intersection of medicine and technology. Besides teaching courses like Technical Entrepreneurship, he oversees NUvention, a series of medical, web and energy innovation programs that expose students to the entire business and product development processes. Inc. Magazine has ranked NUvention one of the 10 best entrepreneurship classes in the U.S. Mike is also an active angel investor in a number of early stage companies.
Mike joined Northwestern University as FCEI director and is a professor in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. With over 20 years' experience in the corporate world prior to Northwestern, Mike launched and ran the very successful Digitas office in Chicago. He also worked with Organic, Inc., Solucient and as chief marketing officer of Bally Total Fitness.
He received his BS in accounting from DePaul University and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
Mike is based in Chicago.

Mike Marasco After 20+ years as an intrapreneur and entrepreneur, Michael joined the full-time faculty of the Northwestern University McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (FCEI) in January 2007. Michael founded FCEI to help evolve engineering beyond the application of the sciences to the creation of businesses that capitalize on innovations.
Previously, Michael was a vice president and acting chief marketing officer at Bally Total Fitness where he led Bally's transition into a multi-channel integrated marketing organization. He was also the founder and general manager of the Chicago office of Digitas, now a Publicis subsidiary, where he guided the office from startup to a staff of 80, providing interactive and relationship marketing services to companies such as Allstate, Best Buy, Brunswick, and others. His background includes key roles at Organic, Inc. and Solucient, Inc.
Michael continues to be a zero and early stage investor through his venture capital company, Solesde. He researches how established businesses can successfully foster new businesses through corporate venturing. Michael also focuses on the concept of "bootstrapping" - how to grow a company with little or no capital.
Michael received his BS in Accountancy with high honors from DePaul University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He currently sits on the boards of Sportiqe, Zone Medical, and ContextMedia.

The judges completed evaluation forms looking at criteria such as marketing approach and financial model, but Marasco said the class does not award prizes because "the ultimate validation" would be securing investment from members of the advisory board. "Our relationship with you doesn't stop today," Marasco told the students. wawong@tribune.com
