He will be competing again on May 24, 2008 at the NPC California Championships at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Culver City, Los Angeles County, California.

Michael A. Manibog - April 2007
His name is Michael Manibog.
Mike started competing only last April, 2004 but is now well on his way to a budding career. "There are no shortcuts in bodybuilding. You either have to have the main ingredients or you won't survive. Discipline, hard work, persistence and the drive are the secrets to your success in this business," says Mike.
Mike was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. His father is from Lallo, Cagayan and his mother is from Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte in the Philippines. His parents immigrated to the US in 1961. Growing up, Mike has always been athletic. He was into soccer, basketball and track and field. In his senior year in college at the University of Iowa, he gave up playing soccer big time and started training with weights. He's never stopped since then.
Mike moved to Aliso Viejo, California in 2001 after his divorce and started a new career in personal training. Starting a new life in California away from his family was difficult at first. He got through with the help and support from his dear friends Kim and Robert Hart. He goes back to Chicago once a month to visit his sons Derek, who is now 12 years old and Matthew, who is now 10 years old.
Mike never considered competing and even shrugged off the idea. But in April, 2004, he thought of challenging himself physically and mentally. From 218 lbs. he cut his weight down to 174 lbs. and joined the Novice class at the Orange County Classic. He came in 12th place. He did it on his own without any help from anyone and just by reading magazines and books in bodybuilding.
Well, he was not satisfied. He thought of giving it another try. But this time he sought the help of his friends from Fit Space Gym in Aliso Viejo where he trains. Thanks for their tips and advices, it paid off. He won the Novice Lightweight class and the Novice Overall of the Max Muscle Show in Anaheim, California last March, 2005.
Placing in the top 5 at the NPC National Championship in Miami Beach was a huge victory for Mike because this show is considered the "Best of the Best" show where all the top athletes in the United States compete. He has to win his class though, in order to qualify him to compete in the Professional level.
Mike is now preparing for the Team Universe National Championship to be held in New York City in July 13 - 14, 2007. Usually, he starts 12 weeks out before the date of the contest. His pre-contest training consist of a 1-hour cardio (treadmill or elliptical equipment) and 6-8 reps on weight training body parts. Six weeks out to the contest date, he increases the cardio training to another half hour to 45 minutes and his weight training reps to 15-20 but using lighter weights.
He plans to pre-diet down to 162 lbs. before he starts the 12 week pre-contest diet where he will go down to 151 lbs. for the actual contest. Mike now believes that maintaining a steady weight of 162 lbs. during off season rather than bulking up to 40 , 50 lbs. is better for the body in general because in the end, the muscles show better quality and separation. Also, the internal organs of the body do not get a lot of beating, pounding and stress from losing a lot of weight.
"I also believe that in preparing for a contest, 70% is the diet and 30% is the training as a whole," says Mike. "6 weeks out, I eat only fish (tilapia, orange roughy) for protein and totally cut out red meat and chicken. This way I get more cuts and separation. I still maintain my carbs like oatmeal in the morning, sweet potato and brown rice for the rest of the day. 1 week out, I eliminate eating carbs at lunch and morning meals and then 1 day out I eliminate eating carbs in the evening. I always get my energy from eating green salads, vegetables and fruits. I don't do sodium depletion and my protein intake is constant," says Mike.
There you go. Mike seems to be congenial in sharing with us the secrets of his success. Mike's goal in the future is to get his Pro card. This will enable him to get endorsements for his business and his career. Maybe when they create a class for athletes below 200 lbs. then he will seriously go for it. But for now he realizes that the odds in going up against the big guys are high.
Whatever challenges that come his way, Mike has overcome them and is working harder to achieve his next goal. And to top it all, Mike is proud to say that he has done every show and training drug-free and natural.
