Lubbers, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, has been promoted to creative director. Lubbers joined the firm in 2008 as senior designer and operates out of Wight’s Chicago office.
“Michael has the natural ability to absorb, understand and seamlessly translate a client’s needs into effective design solutions and he quickly became a respected leader at the firm,†said Mark Wight, chairman and chief executive officer at Wight. “His creative vision and analytical skills has truly transformed our design practice, and we are very pleased to name him our new creative director.â€
Lubbers has been instrumental in many recent high profile Wight projects, including the College of DuPage Student Resource Center, Seaton Computing Center, The Adler Planetarium Sky Theater transformation and UNO Charter Schools.
Before joining Wight, Lubbers was a managing associate and senior designer at OKW Architects.

Earlier in his career, Lubbers served as a design architect for the Chicago Office of CUH2A, Inc., where he worked clients such as Comcast, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Pfizer, and the National Institutes of Health. Lubbers design career began in Michigan where he worked on projects such as Herman Miller’s “Greenhouse†manufacturing facility and office, designed by William McDonough + Partners, and VerBurg & Associates Architects.
In addition to being a LEED-accredited professional, Lubbers is a registered architect and a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He has been a member of Chicago’s Society of Contemporary Art and The Architecture and Design Society, and has participated in the Design Futures Council and The Chicago Architecture Club. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art from Calvin College and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Recently, Lubbers was nominated for Crain’s “40 under 40†and the AIA Young Architect award.

Lubbers has extensive experience in the Chicago design arena, most recently as a Managing Associate and Senior Designer at OKW Architects. His responsibilities included functioning as a design lead for several large urban mixed-use projects such as: The New City for Structured Development, Uptown Redevelopment for PRC Partners LLC, and South Loop Commons for Single Site Solutions. Additional OKW experience included commercial interiors project competitions for clients such as Motorola and Honeywell. Previously, he served as a design architect for the Chicago Office of CUH2A, Inc., where he worked clients such as: Comcast, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Pfizer, and the National Institutes of Health.
