"The objective was not to make some massive social change in the Valley at all," said Michael Kenney, marketing and development coordinator at the Appleton Public Library."Our whole concept was to find a book that would get people talking and interested in reading."
The committee made its selections and then put the books to a public vote.
"When the numbers finally came in - and it was a very big vote - the winner by a nose was ,Nickel and Dimed'," Kenney said.

If they can't make it to the swimming pool, or the lake, area libraries are giving people another way to cool down today.

Appleton Public Library spokesman Michael Kenney says they opened a cooling shelter today, and they're playing a movie for kids, running a trivia game for teens, and offering an evening program for adults.

The Kaukauna and Hortonville public libraries also opened cooling shelters today to help people get some relief, with the heat index expected to break the 110-degree mark this afternoon.
