Dr. Michael Hurtado, Citrus College dean of social and behavioral sciences, will be honored with a commendation from Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich for his work with the Probation Commission, at the Board of Supervisors' weekly meeting on March 27.

Dr. Hurtado has been with Citrus College for over four decades. He was a student at the college during the 60s and early 70s and began his career at the college as an instructional assistant before becoming an instructor in 1973. Dr. Hurtado has spent 24 years in the social and behavioral sciences department, holding the positions of acting chair of the behavioral sciences and chair of social science departments.
Dr. Hurtado also has a distinguished career in law enforcement. He started as a reserve police officer, working the southeast region of Los Angeles in the cities of Bell Gardens and Bell. He garnered various awards while working in the Metro-Gang Task Force, a collaboration of police departments serving southeast Los Angeles County.
His many professional memberships have included the Community College Training Group, the Glendora Chamber of Commerce and the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership. He also served on the board of the National Council for Alcohol and Drug Dependency.
In addition to being a Citrus College graduate, Dr. Hurtado holds a doctorate in educational psychology from Brigham Young University, and he earned his master's and bachelor's degrees in behavioral science from the University of La Verne.
Dr. Geraldine M. Perri, Citrus College superintendent/president, called Dr. Hurtado's recognition a great honor, adding it demonstrates his commitment towards the work he believes in. "That's been a theme throughout his life; working with kids. He believes in it and we're very fortunate to have him here. I think it's a well deserved honor and it's representative of his career," she said.
