Michael's involvement with the NHS began in 1999 when he arrived from Australia and worked with an NHS Research and Development Unit. His particular focus, both then and now, is on how health professionals can integrate the voice of the patient (and colleagues) into their on-going professional development. Michael worked as the Director of Patient Experience for the National Primary Care Development Team, and as an Associate (Patient Experience) with the National Clinical Governance Support Team. Prior to leaving Australia, he was both a Medical Educator and Quality Assurance Officer with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners based in Queensland.
Michael holds honorary professor and senior research posts at the Peninsula Medical School (United Kingdom) and the School of Medicine, Griffith University (Australia). His academic background focused on healthcare, evaluation and clinical pastoral education, and includes a PhD in medical education and a Bachelor of Theology. Prior to his university posts, he was a Franciscan monk and his ministry included hospital and prison chaplaincy, and working with street kids and young offenders in rehabilitation programmes.
