Biography
Michael Flowers, Sr. has been a resident of West Covina for more than 33 years. He served the federal government for 39 years in two capacities: from 1974-1978 he served in the United States Army and from 1979-2014 he served as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. He retired from the Postal Service in 2014.
Michael was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Army, where he was promoted to Sergeant. He attended Los Angeles Trade Tech and then transferred to Long Beach City College. After the completion of his military service, the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier hired Michael. He then moved to West Covina to be close to his older brother, who was raising his children in the city and spoke highly of it. Michael loved this city so much, he decided to set roots, marry, and raise his children here as well. Today, five different households of Michael's immediate family members reside in West Covina.
Michael married Antoinette, in 1985 and they have three children; Tracie (wife, mother of three, and school teacher), Michael Jr. (father and college student) and Ariel (college student).
Over the years as a letter carrier, Michael's job afforded him the opportunity to be accessible to the community. He was given the opportunity to listen and understand the concerns of the citizens. Because of the close relationships he established, he is involved in community activities that are designed to bond the citizens and increase awareness within the community, such as Neighborhood Watch.

Ralph L. Flowers, in a negligence ...

Ralph L. Flowers, in a negligence lawsuit filed in Martin County Circuit Court Friday, claims two members of the Stuart Police Department unlawfully arrested his son, Michael Thomas Flowers, on Nov. 8, 2005, and assaulted, battered, Tasered and used excessive force on him.

Michael Thomas Flowers, who was 39 at the time, two days later hanged himself in a medical unit cell while under the care of Armor Correctional Health Services in the Martin County Jail, according to the lawsuit.
He was a carpenter and Fort Pierce Westwood High School graduate who served in the U.S. Army and has a son, Kessmine, according to his obituary.
As a result of the arrest and being injured at the Stuart Police Department, Stuart Fire Rescue members provided him with treatment and transported him to Martin Memorial Medical Center, according to the lawsuit.
Michael Thomas Flowers then was placed in an individual cell in the jail's medical unit, the lawsuit said.
"Bob Crowder, Sheriff of Martin County and Armor Correctional Health Services, Inc., had a duty to prevent and otherwise protect Michael Thomas Flowers ... from all reasonable risks of harm to himself, or otherwise to commit suicide, as well as a reasonable risk of harm by others," the lawsuit filed by Fort Lauderdale attorney William Hutchinson Jr. said.

Michael Flowers has been an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts for three years.Through dedication and hard work he has earned the position of Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 881.Being the Assistant Scoutmaster, he acts as the liaison between the scouts and the staff.He helps develop the troop programs and the lesson plan.By regularly associating with the scouts he is able to get feedback from them.He then uses their feedback to develop and coordinate activities beneficial to the scouts' interests and needs with the rest of the staff.
Prior to the BSA, Mr. Flowers has always been involved in mentoring and helping others.For five years, starting at the age of ten, he volunteered at the Greater Progressive Missionary Baptist Church located at the south side of Chicago.Here he did various jobs including teaching Bible School to students 5-8 years his junior.Here he developed the interest in teaching and selfless service.
He attended Lane Technical High School where he joined Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC).In JROTC he participated in various clubs and teams that involve training and mentoring younger cadets.He would usually attend school very early and stay late just for these clubs.Outside of JROTC, he was a part of Community Civics, where he would assist the different departments such as the school computer lab.
After high school he continued to pursue his military career by joining the U.S. Army.He served 2 and half years active at Ft. Hood, Texas.There he served in logistic supplies for the 2/20/FA.He is currently finishing his eight-year service as a reservist.He is also pursing a college degree so he can one day be commissioned as a second lieutenant.
Presently he works for the Hilton O'Hare as a security guard where he nightly continues assists guests and assures their safety.
