Michael Esser, Grand Central Station's director, and some other show choir directors said the controversy throws the results of the competition into question.

"I realize Paul made a difficult decision," Esser said."This is an unfortunate situation, one that is hard to comprehend and difficult to explain to students and parents.
"There is an added disappointment for all schools involved because they will never know the unaltered results," he said.

Esser, Grand Central Station's director, said the winning streak is more about luck than anything else, but his show choir's success is more about hard work than luck.
"The show design is a key factor, but we spend a lot of time to make it good," Esser said."It's still about the fundamentals - singing well, playing well and dancing well. But we've been lucky, too."
He also credits Kim Shively, director of Central's junior varsity show choir, Central Connection, for preparing students well.
Judges, whether show choir specialists or music teachers, like Grand Central Station's whole package - vocals, choreography, show band and presentation.Central has won many awards for vocals, choreography and show band the past several years.
...
"We try to spend a lot more time on being honest performers and connecting to the music, and making the words our intentions," Esser said.
"The whole package fortunately and luckily has been there," he said."Most of the kids are buying into it, and that it takes a good work ethic."
...
Grand Central Station members said their success can be contributed to Esser and choreographer Michael Weaver, who design a show with great music and choreography.
...
"We have amazing choreography, and the last three years, Mr. Esser has been great at picking songs that flow and putting them together in an unbelievable show that gets more technically difficult," said Jared Bendel, a Central junior and third-year member of Grand Central Station.
...
Esser said he is happy with the improvement of this year's show choir, which has won the Onalaska Classic and Hastings, Minn., competitions.
"The more I see this show, the more I like it," Esser said."It is growing, and the vocals are getting better."
Esser said Grand Central Station will face a major test at its next competition March 8 at Totino-Grace High School in Fridley, Minn. The line-up includes several good show choirs including Waconia, Minn., which defeated the Onalaska Hilltoppers at La Crosse Logan Showcase 2003; Bemidji, Minn., a finalist at the Onalaska Classic; Johnston, Iowa; Davenport, Iowa, North; Sioux City, Iowa, East; Hastings, Minn.; two Bloomington, Minn., high schools; La Crosse Logan's The Class Act and The Classy Ladies; Onalaska's OHS Express; and Central Connection.
"You can't focus on winning because that's not what this is all about," Esser said."It (the winning streak) is going to end some time."
Onalaska Hilltoppers will compete next at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jefferson High School on March 15, while Grand Central Station performs across town the same day at Cedar Rapids Washington High School.Onalaska and Logan also will compete at Holmen's invitational March 22.
The Hilltoppers may travel to Urbandale, Iowa, in late March if the competition is rescheduled.
