La Mesan Named 2017 Board President LA MESA -- The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) recently elected its board officers for the 2017 calendar year.  La Mesa resident Michael Emerson was elected as board president, Gloria Chadwick as vice president and Virginia Hall, GHD’s newest board member, as secretary. Board member Robert “Bob Ayres, previous board president since July 2014, was selected by Emerson to serve as board treasurer. Also serving on the five-member board is Randy Lenac, who also recently joined the board of directors for the Association of California Healthcare Districts as a GHD representative.  “I’m very excited and both honored and privileged as we look ahead and take advantage of opportunities to serve our community, Emerson said, “I have seen firsthand how seriously we take our role of addressing unmet healthcare needs and monitoring the health care services provided under contract at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. Every constituent can feel confident that we are committed to doing our utmost to assure that patients’ needs are met and that reasonable expectations are exceeded.  Emerson, who joined the GHD board in 2008, is serving for the first time as board president. Emerson also serves on the Grossmont Hospital Corporation (GHC) board of directors, the legal entity for the hospital lease agreement between Sharp HealthCare and GHD. In addition to serving on the 15-member GHC board, Emerson serves on three GHC committees, including Finance, Facilities and Quality and Safety.  During his time on the GHD board, Emerson spearheaded the partnership between GHD and the County of San Diego’s “Live Well San Diego program. Last year, the GHD board unanimously approved a resolution for GHD’s “Live Well San Diego designation, which is presented by the County only after an applicant demonstrates a commitment to adopting proven strategies that will improve the health and safety of local residents. The partnership signifies that GHD shares in the goals of “Live Well San Diego to empower residents to take positive actions for their own health, safety and wellbeing through community involvement.  Also while on the board, Emerson initiated the launch of a book, scheduled for publication in 2017, which will chronicle the history of GHD. Founded in 1952, GHD will celebrate its 65 year anniversary in 2017.  Emerson, a registered dispensing optician (RDO) since 1975 and owner of Hart Optical Co. of La Mesa, was appointed to the board in May 2008 to fill a vacancy. GHD offices are located in La Mesa near Sharp Grossmont Hospital.  East County voters reelected Robert “Bob Ayres and Michael Emerson to four-year terms. The El Cajon resident was then elected to a four-year term in November 2012.  Emerson, a registered ophthalmic dispenser and owner of Hart Optical Co. of La Mesa, was appointed to the board in May 2008 to fill a vacancy. Her husband Ronn has served as a member of the Santee City Council since November 2014.  The swearing in of Ayres, Emerson and Hall was held Dec. 5. The San Diego Registrar of Voters reported the final numbers were: Hall, 88,930 votes or 25 percent; Emerson, 66,967 votes or 19 percent; Ayres, 59,221 or 16 percent.  GHD, an East County regional public agency that supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County, serves as landlord of Grossmont Hospital’s property and buildings on behalf of taxpayers. In comparison, SDG&E says the average household uses about 500 kilowatt hours in a 30-day period.  “We have the capacity to sell surplus electricity back to the utility company, said Michael Emerson, GHD board member and chair of the GHD Proposition G Committee. “We’re pleased that the new cogen system has replaced two smaller existing combustion turbine generators that were installed back in 1984.  The CEP building was constructed with 131 tons of reinforced steel rods or bars surrounded by 4.23 million pounds of concrete with a 106-by-70-foot concrete foundation slab that is four feet thick. Whether you were at Por Favo's listing to Crazy Steve's tunes or up by Johnny B's listening to Mike of the Mic it was a fun time for all. This is a great Family Friendly event to show the kids what hot rods and Happy Dayz were all about.

“We are grateful to the taxpayers and voters of East County who approved the public financing that has been paying for the renovation and modernization of their publicly-owned hospital over the past 10 years, said Michael Emerson, 2017 GHD board president. “Their commitment to our local hospital will save lives and ensure that future patient care needs of the community can be met for decades to come.

Even in the event of an outage or other emergency, the hospital will continue to operate as needed. In addition to Emerson, other speakers at the Dec. 20 event included San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob and Dave Grundstrom, chair, Grossmont Hospital Corporation (GHC).
