The Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries International, Inc., has elected Michael Elder, as its new chair. Elder took office during Goodwill's annual Delegate Assembly, held in Greensboro, NC, June 21-24. He will serve a one-year term.
Elder has served as President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont (Charlotte, NC) since 1976. During his tenure there, he has continually increased the Charlotte Goodwill's annual revenue and improved service and program visibility in his community.

Elder began his Goodwill career in 1975 in Baltimore as Director of Community Services at Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake. Before joining Goodwill, Elder worked at Marriott Corporation (Bethesda, MD) and Southwest Christian Parish, United Methodist Church (Baltimore). He earned an AA from Wesley College (Dover, DE), an AB from Western Maryland College (Westminster, MD), and attended the Candler School of Theology at Emory University (Atlanta).
Elder has served two consecutive terms as Vice Chair of the Goodwill Industries International Board of Directors and is a past officer of the organization's Conference of Executives. In 2002, he received Goodwill's prestigious Kenneth K. King Award for executive excellence. Elder served as an officer of the North Carolina Association of Rehabilitation Facilities and was appointed to serve as a member of the North Carolina Governor's Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities. He is a member of Rotary International, serves on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Workforce Development Board and the United Way of Central Carolinas Council of Agency Executives. When he's not leading or advising, Elder enjoys reading and riding motorcycles. He resides in Charlotte, NC, with his wife and daughter.

Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont President and CEO Michael Elder was honored on September 13, 2006, at the Charlotte Business Journal's Diversity in Business Awards as one of 18 individuals who make diversity a core part of their everyday contribution.
During a 30-year career at Goodwill, Elder has overseen services provided to more than 50,000 people.The organization focuses on people's abilities, not disabilities, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin or age.Goodwill expands the definition of diversity to include people with any barriers to employment.The agency has found employment in the last six years for 120 Asians, more than 6,000 African-Americans, almost 600 Hispanics and 38 Native Americans.
"As our Goodwill employee and volunteer groups have become more diverse, we have gained a better understanding of how to serve our diverse sets of customers," said Elder."With that understanding has come significant success in helping individuals overcome barriers to employment.When people have the opportunity to spend quality time with others from a different place, barriers and stereotypes begin to fade."
Elder, 57, served as the 2003-04 Chairman of the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries International and was the first Goodwill CEO to have served in that position.He is also a past officer of the Goodwill Industries International Conference of Executives and a recipient of Goodwill International's prestigious Kenneth K. King Award that recognizes executive excellence.On the state level, he is a past officer of the N.C. Association of Rehabilitation Facilities and a past appointed member of the North Carolina Governor's Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities.
He also has served on many local boards and advisory committees.He is a past president of the Freedom Drive Development Association and a past chair of United Way's Council of Agency Executives.Currently, he serves on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Workforce Development Board and is a member of the Charlotte Rotary Club.
