Michael Cooper, Virtuoso Mime and Visual Artist, Brings His Family Friendly Masked Marvels and Wondertales to Capitol Center for the Arts

Welcome to Masked Marvels & Wondertales
, the eye-popping one-man variety show by Michael Cooper
, the virtuoso storyteller, mask-maker and mime.
On January 26, Cooper
will bring his
colorful cast of characters to Concord for two performances at 1pm and 4pm as part of the Capitol Center
for the Arts' Showtime Sundays series.
Combining the mythical and the autobiographical, Cooper
employs astonishingly detailed masks as well as impressive physical dexterity to tell original stories that highlight the presence of the miraculous in everyday occurrences.
Vignettes include "The Baby," inspired by the birth of Cooper's first child; "The Horse," which pays homage to his
father, a veterinarian who courted Cooper's mother on horseback; and "Fish-or-Man," in which he
asks the audience "How do you think a fish would feel... if he
were the one winding the reel?"
But the stars of the show are Cooper's exquisite masks, each of which can take up to 300 hours to make.
Working primarily with scavenged materials, Cooper
begins by ripping paper bags or old cloth into small pieces that are then dipped into glue and laminated over a carefully crafted clay sculpture.

But the band set its sights ...
But the band set its sights higher when it began work on Future Selves, which was originally self-released in 2009. (At the time, Mike Cooper was Transfer's drummer; he later left the band to focus on his project Hyena.) For previous records, they'd record their songs as fast as they could to save money.

Stratman and musical partner Michael Cooper, Hyena's drummer, spent years toiling in the local alternative rock scene.
played drums for local rockers Transfer and also worked with Stratman in Crash Encore, another San Diego rock band.
"I heard [Stratman] working on some stuff that just sounded totally different and I said to him, 'Dude, let's do some indie-electro,'" Cooper
Stratman and Cooper haven't been together a year, but they've already garnered enough devoted fans to pack the house at a variety of venues including FLUXX, Belly Up Tavern, House of Blues and The Casbah.
More recently, the boys have been playing shows in LA, where Cooper
says they've had a "huge response."

Here's a brief Q&A I had with band member Michael Cooper:
: That it's made from mixing science and sex.
Yes people seem to have fun with it.
It's uplifting and what's the point of life if there isn't love and fun?
SDMUSICSCENE: What kind of experience do you plan on bringing to the stage performance wise?
: We want you to dance and that's the bottom line but when you open your eyes you can see that we aren't DJ's.
: Well we did a soft release through our website but soon will get it to ITunes and all.
It's really not that hard.
SDMUSICSCENE: Tell me the funniest story you have experienced as a band so far.
: Playing a show with a metal band and watching people that were there to see the metal band get into it.
I thought it was entertaining at least....
