Michael Cooper, Virtuoso Mime and Visual Artist, Brings His Family Friendly Masked Marvels and Wondertales to Capitol Center for the Arts
CONCORD, NH: A high-kicking giant. A clumsy cowpoke. A grumpy, pipe-smoking trout fishing beside an imaginary stream. Welcome to Masked Marvels & Wondertales, the eye-popping one-man variety show by Michael Cooper, the virtuoso storyteller, mask-maker and mime. On January 26, Cooper will bring his colorful cast of characters to Concord for two performances at 1pm and 4pm as part of the Capitol Center for the Arts' Showtime Sundays series.
Combining the mythical and the autobiographical, Cooper employs astonishingly detailed masks as well as impressive physical dexterity to tell original stories that highlight the presence of the miraculous in everyday occurrences. Vignettes include "The Baby," inspired by the birth of Cooper's first child; "The Horse," which pays homage to his father, a veterinarian who courted Cooper's mother on horseback; and "Fish-or-Man," in which he asks the audience "How do you think a fish would feel... if he were the one winding the reel?"
But the stars of the show are Cooper's exquisite masks, each of which can take up to 300 hours to make. Working primarily with scavenged materials, Cooper begins by ripping paper bags or old cloth into small pieces that are then dipped into glue and laminated over a carefully crafted clay sculpture.

BLOWING ROCK, NC Michael Cooper is a Poet of the Stage an eye-popping visual artist and a virtuoso mime whose exquisite performances combine breathtaking handcrafted masks, original stories of courage and wonder, outlandish stilt dancing, and a physical repertoire ranging from the madcap to the sublime. Cooper, whose programs have been hailed as moving sculpture, will bring his one-man extravaganza Michael Coopers Masked Marvels to the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock for a special 10am kids & family performance on Saturday, June 13.
"Masked Marvels is as subtle as it is high speed, says The Irish Times. Think of Spaulding Gray crossed with Superman, plus an amazing array of masks...Best of all was the Giant on stilts. Creating his vast self before our eyes, he began dancing on bare tiptoes with a grace that proved surprisingly beautiful..
Taking up to 300 hours to produce a single paper or cloth mask, Cooper, whose performances have dazzled audiences for almost 30 years, has elevated this most ancient of theatre crafts to the level of a fine art. His ability as a wordsmith enables him to reel in the most discerning of crowds with the nuance of a poet, the joy and timing of a first-rate comedian, and the twists and intrigue of a master storyteller. And whether hes high kicking on giant legs, animating one of his magical creations or, quite literally, leaning on air, the unending enthusiasm of this masked marvel captivates both young and old.

But the band set its sights higher when it began work on Future Selves, which was originally self-released in 2009. (At the time, Mike Cooper was Transfer's drummer; he later left the band to focus on his project Hyena.) For previous records, they'd record their songs as fast as they could to save money.

An Interview with band member Michael Cooper
...
Here's a brief Q&A I had with band member Michael Cooper:
...
COOPER: That it's made from mixing science and sex. Yes people seem to have fun with it. It's uplifting and what's the point of life if there isn't love and fun?
SDMUSICSCENE: What kind of experience do you plan on bringing to the stage performance wise?
COOPER: We want you to dance and that's the bottom line but when you open your eyes you can see that we aren't DJ's.
...
COOPER: Well we did a soft release through our website but soon will get it to ITunes and all. It's really not that hard.
SDMUSICSCENE: Tell me the funniest story you have experienced as a band so far.
COOPER: Playing a show with a metal band and watching people that were there to see the metal band get into it. I thought it was entertaining at least....
