Michael P. Bohrer, Ph.D - Vice President, Engineering
Dr. Michael Bohrer has more than 25 years of experience in process development and new product introduction, much of which has been focused on optical fiber technology. As a Technical Manager at Bell Laboratories and OFS Laboratories he led a group responsible for development of manufacturing processes from pilot-scale to full production capacity. This group introduced or contributed to many successful optical fiber manufacturing processes including germanium recovery for silica optical fiber manufacturing, sol-gel production of high purity silica tubing, high efficiency fluorine doping and photochlorination of silicon tetrachloride. His group also had responsibility for the design and operation of a pilot-scale polymerization facility for manufacturing lithographic polymer materials used in AT&T's microelectronics R&D division.
Dr. Bohrer has authored or coauthored 6 technical papers covering optical fiber manufacturing technologies, as well as 28 other articles on polymer synthesis, macromolecular transport through membranes and electronic materials processing. He holds 5 US patents in the field of optical fiber manufacturing. Dr. Bohrer earned his Ph.D. (Chemical Engineering, 1979) and M.S. (Chemical Engineering, 1976) degrees from Stanford University. His undergraduate degree (Chemical Engineering, 1975) is from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The germanium-recovery process was developed by Bell Labs researchers Dave Mixon and Mike Bohrer, of the Polymer and Chemical Engineering department, and scaled up for commercial operations in collaboration with colleagues Lisa Green and Ed Nelson of the Optical Fiber Development and Engineering organization in Lucent's Network Systems operating unit.
