But it doesn't always work that way, said Mike Bisek, owner of Helicopter Experts in Bulverde.Bisek also has FAA approval to give pilots their flight ratings. "I can't promise anybody a license in X number of hours," Bisek said."To become a private pilot, it takes 35 hours. For some, it may take 50 to 70 hours to get that rating." He said he occasionally gave Silver State students their flight rating tests and noticed that, while they could fly, they lacked "aeronautical knowledge" like experience flying at night or cross country. "They had a factory-produced school," Bisek said."They would put on a big media presentation and talk about the shortage of pilots, which there is.But they made it sound easy." Once students became certified flight instructors, they would be hired by the school to teach. The teaching gave them the chance to rack up hours that would make them more desirable hires as commercial pilots.Bisek said most commercial operations would not hire pilots unless they had between 600 and 1,000 hours.
