Michael Bamshad, Associate Director of the NWIGM is focused on clinical genomics. Dr. Bamshad is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Genetics and Developmental Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and Seattle Children´s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, an Adjunct Professor of Genome Sciences and the Director of the Center for Clinical Genomics. Dr. Bamshad has extensive administrative, managerial, budgetary, and leadership experience. He developed and led the highly successful Center for Clinical Genetics Research at the University of Utah for 5 years where he was also Associate Director of the Division of Medical Genetics and Associate Program Director of the General Clinical Research Center. He has extensive experience in studies of the genetic basis of diseases, and is known internationally for his work in population genetics and human evolution. His research currently focuses on how variation influences susceptibility to common diseases among humans.
