Mervan F. Osborne

As Associate Head of School at Beacon Academy, Mervan brings to CA his passion for and experience with independent schools. Beacon Academy, where Mervan served as director of admissions before accepting his current position, offers Boston area students a fourteen-month program which prepares them for independent and competitive public exam high schools. Beacon offers the only such program in the nation.
Prior to Beacon, Mervan taught English and coached at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge for eleven years. During those years, he served also as resident director of A Better Chance House in Winchester, Massachusetts. In 2009 Mervan was appointed to the Massachusetts Humanities Board of Directors by Governor Deval Patrick and is an elected member of the Cambridge School Committee.

A native of London, Mervan grew up primarily in New York City. He is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. In addition to his work in schools, Mervan has a passion for filmmaking. He earned an MFA from Boston University and he has taught filmmaking at Shady Hill School and the Steppingstone Foundation.

Born and raised in London, England, Mervan Osborne moved to New York City with his family as a teen. After graduating from St. George's School, he studied Studio Arts at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, Secondary Education at the University of California and earned his MFA in Film Production at Boston University. Mervan spent two years working for Miramax Films in New York, and taught English in Los Angeles as a member of the Teach for America founding corps. After spending 12 years teaching English and Drama and working in the admissions office at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Mervan participated in the founding of Beacon Academy. He currently serves as Beacon Academy's Head of School where he focuses on recruitment of future classes, placement of Beacon's graduates and broadening the school's impact. Mervan teaches both the Facing History and Ourselves course at Beacon and Visual Thinking Strategies at the Museum of Fine Arts. Currently a trustee at Concord Academy, Mervan has served two terms as the Governor's appointee to the Mass Humanities Board and was twice elected to serve as a member of the Cambridge School Committee. MERVAN OSBORNE is Dean of Students at Beacon Academy, a program that prepares a select group of urban students for entrance to competitive independent and public exam high schools. Before assuming his present position, Mervan spent eleven years at The Buckingham Browne and Nichols School, where he taught English and Drama, coached several sports and served as an admissions officer. During his first 3 years at BB&N, Mervan also served as resident director of A Better Chance House in Winchester, MA. Prior to coming to BB&N, he spent two years as a member of the inaugural 1990 Teach for America corps in Compton, CA. Mervan has a passion for education, and for filmmaking. For the past three summers, he has taught filmmaking at the Shady Hill School, at the Steppingstone Foundation and the Creative Arts at Park program. Mervan was born in London and moved to New York City when he was eleven years old. He earned his B.A. at Trinity College in Hartford, CT and his M.F.A. at Boston University. Mervan was appointed by Governor Patrick in 2008.
