A Republican, Hlatcu is an engineer for the IBEW and a photojournalist for National Geographic, and, he says, "I have the experience and I want to do in Anchorage what nobody has done as mayor here, and what nobody can do behind me because I want to put all my skills together."
Hlatcu's number one priority for Anchorage is to implement a sales tax to relieve the tax burden on property owners. "Not implementing a sales tax will continue to place an undue burden on property owners already struggling with higher costs of energy and general purchase items in Anchorage, and Alaska in general," he states. "I want to help the small businesses; I want to bring stable companies for our people to get jobs," Hlatcu says. "I want to spread the companies around Anchorage, in Eagle River and all around here, not just in Anchorage, where the people live. When there's so many companies in Anchorage people travel, use lots of gas, there are accidents, big problems." Hlatcu also has interesting proposals for the education system, including integrating students with local companies while in high school so that they're learning a trade while finishing their public school education. "I want to introduce back here in the culture dancing and instruments, tango, waltz, country and swing," Hlatcu says, and he has a plan to purchase Romanian violins at a discounted rate to provide to students. Everyone should be working, Hlatcu says in his Romanian-inflected English. "This is your right," Hlatcu says.
