St. Joe grad and Irish captain Melissa Lechlitner has battled through three different injuries this season. Now she's healthy and playing better than ever, leading the Irish to an undefeated record.
It's been a trying year physically for Notre Dame senior captain Melissa Lechlitner. Of course, she never complained. She just did what she could on the floor to help the 3rd-ranked and undefeated Irish win game after game.
And for her, she's happy with the results---Notre Dame is 14-0.
The St. Joe grad has battled through multiple injuries this season---quad, hamstring and wrist. Early on, the wrist certainly played a factor in her ability to score.
"I just struggled a little bit because I was in a cast all pre-season and I couldn't do any individual workouts," Lechlitner explained Sunday. "I was doing everything with my left hand.

MONTICELLO, Ind. -- St. Joseph's Melissa Lechlitner provided the necessary knockout punch to the Calumet High girls basketball team Saturday afternoon.
The 5-foot-7 sophomore Lechlitner scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the opening period as St. Joe used a quick start to cruise past Calumet, 82-51, in semifinal action of the Class 3-A Twin Lakes Regional.
"We knew Btynar was the heart and soul of their team, so our goal was to come out right away and try to shut her down and take the life out of them in the process," said Lechlitner, who was 4-of-6 from the floor and 10-of-10 from the free throw line."Getting off to the start we did offensively was really unbelievable because it seemed to give us the boost we needed to perform well on both sides of the floor."
Lechlitner also handed out seven assists and got plenty of support from Aimee Likta with 12 points.

SOUTH BEND -- Melissa Lechlitner has added a final touch to her impressive high school hoops resume.
And it's a truly fitting honor for the St. Joseph's star.
Lechlitner who will play at Notre Dame, was named Saturday to the Indiana All-Star team.
"I'm really excited," said Lechlitner in a phone interview Friday night.
Lechlitner, a force from
day one of her freshman year, led St. Joe to an 88-16 record the past four seasons with a Class 3-A state title in 2005 and a runner-up finish in 2003.She ended her career atop the school record charts in scoring (1,701), assists (621) and steals (351) and ranks second in 3-pointers (107).
"To say we're very proud of Melissa doesn't even touch the surface of it," said St. Joe coach Mike Megyese.
Lechlitner turned in a stellar senior season.The Northern Indiana Conference MVP averaged 21.4 points, 6.8 assists and 3.6 steals per game as the Indians went 22-3, losing 56-49 to eventual state champion Fort Wayne Bishop Luers in the semistate.She then finished second to Purdue-bound center Amber Harris of North Central in the recent voting for Miss Basketball.Harris, who led North Central to Class 4-A state titles in 2004 and 2005, garnered 60 votes for Miss Basketball, while Lechlitner had 37 and Ashley Barlow of Pike (another Notre Dame recruit) was third with 27.
"It was an honor to be second for Miss Basketball," Lechlitner said."It was disappointing in a way, but not heartbreaking."
The Indiana All-Stars will face Kentucky June 17 at Western Kentucky and June 24 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.Lechlitner is sure to get plenty of playing time the Hoosier squad, which is also scheduled to play exhibition games against the Indiana Junior All-Stars on June 14, 20 and 22.
"I just want to go in there and give my full effort to the All-Star team," said Lechlitner."I want to make sure everyone plays hard and we get two wins."
Lechlitner becomes the third St. Joe player to be an Indiana All-Star.
Joining Lechlitner, Harris, Barlow and Reed as All-Stars named Saturday by the Indianapolis Star were Melanie Thornton of Carmel, Susan Lester of Pendleton Heights, Dee Dee Jernigan of East Chicago, FahKara Malone of Evansville Memorial, Audrey McDonald of Kokomo, Maria Olsthoorn of Castle, Chanell Ridley of Fort Wayne Concordia and Amanda Stull of Rushville.
St. Joseph's guard Melissa Lechlitner has been named an Indiana All-Star.
