Dr Melissa Dearey has recently been appointed as PARLE Lecturer in Research Methods in the Politics Department at the University of York.PARLE (pronounced par-lay) is the Politics Active Research Learning Environment, a joint Open University-University of York postgraduate research training multimedia resource supported by HEFCE's Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning Programme.Dr Dearey is responsible for teaching research methods at undergraduate and graduate levels and will be actively involved in the development and evaluation of the PARLE project. This post follows her appointment as a Research Fellow at the Open University in Leeds, where she worked as the main researcher on the ESRC funded project "Behind Closed Doors: Understanding Intimacy and Sexuality in Families", and as an Associate Lecturer teaching courses on research methods, work and inequality and the politics of dissent.Dr Dearey's background is in cultural sociology, with a special interest in the literatures of dissent and political prisoner auto/biography.Her research explores the dynamics between the auto/biographical representations of iconic radical/terrorist figures and the influence of these life writings on subsequent historical representations of socio-political movements. In this respect, she seeks to further develop the use of auto/biography as a critical idiom for textual qualitative research.
