Melissa Clark, director of field services for the National Kidney Foundation in the Eastern Panhandle and Western Maryland, presents some information about kidney disease at the free kidney screening event held at the Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in three adults is at risk for kidney disease, but early detection can help reduce the need for dialysis or transplants. Clark said more people die of kidney disease than leukemia or breast cancer.
"Your risk factors for kidney disease increase if you're diabetic or have high blood pressure or have a family history of either. There's no symptoms, so a lot of times when kidney disease strikes, you find out and the next minute you're in the throes of it," Clark said.
