Dr. Melinda LuperDr Melinda Luper of the Animal Medical and Surgical HospitalMelinda Luper, D.V.M., attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah and was accepted after only three years of undergraduate work into the Veterinary College at Oklahoma State University. While there, she was on the Dean's honor list and involved in many organizations including president of the Student Chapter of the American Animal Hospital Association. She graduated in the top ten percent of her class in May 2001 and has been with Animal Medical and Surgical Hospital since that time. Growing up on a small farm in rural Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Dr. Luper's father helped inspire the idea of her becoming a veterinarian by the age of six.She was allowed to keep numerous kinds of pets including the typical horses, dogs and cats, as well as the many wildlife babies that were raised and rehabilitated with the aide of her father. She developed an interest in exotics when she acquired a blue crowned conure at age fourteen and still has Jackie today as a wonderful pet. Dr. Luper brings to AMSH her ambition for learning, evident in her scholastic achievements, and compassion for companion pets that keep Animal Medical and Surgical Hospital on the cusp of new treatments and procedures. She is well versed in all aspects of small animal and exotic medicine with a special interest in avian medicine and orthopedics.Dr. Luper also specializes in pet behavior and has a unique ability to relate to animals and help in problem situations.

Meet Our Veterinarians

Dr. Melinda Luper
Dr. Melinda Luper grew up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Oklahoma State University in 2001. She practiced in Tulsa for seven years before moving to Houston. After a brief stint doing relief work, she decided she missed her veterinary family and joined ours. She says, "I feel like the staff here are very caring and treat every pet as one of their own furry kids." Dr. Luper enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, but loves preventative care and nutrition the best. She also combines holistic medicine with traditional therapies for a unique approach to veterinary medicine. She has extensive experience in surgery and internal medicine. We are now able to welcome exotic patients to our hospital due to Dr. Luper's expertise. Besides the care she has provided for household avian and small mammal patients, she was also the veterinarian for a large exotic and wildlife sanctuary near Tulsa. Lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) were under her care, among the many others. Dr. Luper is certified as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. If you are interested in getting your dog certified, we can set up a time for you. This is especially helpful for owners wanting to get their dog involved as a therapy dog. Also, some home insurance policies actually give a discount for certified dogs. Dr. Luper has three children of her own: Arrow, the German shepherd, goes to Schutzhund training every week and thoroughly enjoys her daily five-mile runs with Dr. Luper and Arrow's new son, Leucian. Jackie is a blue crowned conure that Dr. Luper has had since she was 14 years old. Jackie wishes she was an only child.
