"We're not here to judge anyone," said Melanie Martinez, TBCH Family Care Supervisor.Melanie, a former Gracewood resident, came to the program after the company she worked for crumbled, part of one of the largest corporate scandals in American history.Raising two children, she lost her savings, stocks, home and her car.Gracewood proved to be a place of refuge that helped set her life back on track. "Gracewood offered my kids a home away from the chaos of the city," she said."It was quiet and peaceful, almost normal."When they enter either the Houston or Round Rock programs, moms are asked to make a list of goals for themselves and their children. It's Children At Heart's mission to help them reach those goals, however small or large they may be. "Some moms might just want to learn to save money," Martinez said. When asked what the biggest difference is between Children At Heart's programs and others, Martinez has just one explanation. "It's God," she said."God works in these women's lives because we pray for them daily, we talk about Him with them and we want them to realize He is real and He is there for them."For the moms served through TBCH and Gracewood, the gifts they receive by gaining independence makes every day like Mother's Day. "This place feeds you hope when you need it most," Melanie said.

When Melanie Martinez settled into her role as Family Care Supervisor for TBCH's single mother program, she didn't realize just how in demand her knowledge would be. Her office chair was barely warm before her telephone lines began burning up with calls from other agencies wanting to know the secret to Family Care's success. That, she said, gave her an idea. "I've always felt that if God blesses you with something, you should share it," Martinez said."We've really got something good here," Martinez said."Between finding a place, gathering names of invitees, printing materials and collecting giveaway items for those attending, it's been a lot of work," Martinez said.
