Melanie Devine, with the North Central Texas Council of Governments, discussed the Citizen's Corp. and Community Emergency Response Team programs with commissioners.
The programs serve several purposes, Devine
"CERT teaches and prepares residents to take care of themselves for the first 72 hours in case of a major emergency or disaster," Devine
"Something we're trying to get word out about, especially in rural areas."
Another purpose is to establish CERT teams to aid rescue workers.
"They would be trained," Devine
"It's a totally collaborative effort," Devine
"Our goal is to get involvement with local police and fire departments so those departments are aware of this group and their purpose, what they're learning and what they're there for."
CERT groups can be used for search and rescue, conducting traffic, assisting rescue workers with water, food and other needs, even to help out during public events such as parades and the Tour de Goatneck, Devine
Devine and Mohr said the program is helpful for all residents whether they have interest in joining a CERT team or not because it teaches important safety measures.
