The Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) and ESS Support Services Worldwide (a member of Compass Group Canada), recently announced the 2015 inductee into the Aboriginal Business Hall of Fame (ABHF): Melvin E. Benson, Beaver Lake Cree Nation. Aboriginal business leaders inducted into the ABHF are recognized for their accomplishments in achieving sustainable economic development in Aboriginal communities.

Mel is president of Mel E. Benson Management Services Inc. an international consulting firm working in various countries with a focus on First Nations/Corporate negotiations. Mel is part owner of the private oil & gas companies Tenax Energy Inc and Kanatex Energy Inc. Mel has been a director of Suncor Energy since 2000, serving on the compensation and environment, health and safety committees. Mel also sits as a Director of the Fort McKay Group of Companies. Mel retired from Exxon International and Imperial Oil Canada in 2000 after a long career as an operations manager and senior member of project management based in Houston, TX, where he worked on international projects based in Africa and the former Soviet Union. Early in his career Mr. Benson held a position with the Secretary of State Department as well as working as an instructor at Grant MacEwan College.
He is a member of several charitable organizations and prides himself on being active in his community. He is a past director of STARS, a past member of NAIT's Board of Governors and a past chairman of the Pembina Producers Association. Mel has been a Director of Hull Child and Family Services for the past 8 years and recently became a member of the advisory council for the Alberta Land Institute through the University of Alberta.
Mel maintains close cultural ties to the land and places high value on responsible development. Mel is a member of the Beaver Lake Cree Nation, located in northeastern Alberta.

Mel Benson was elected to Suncor's Board of Directors in April 2000 and is chair of the environment, health and safety committee and a member of the human resources and compensation committee. He is president of Mel E. Benson Management Services Inc., an international management consulting firm based in Calgary, an owner of Tenax Energy Inc., chair of Winalta Homes Inc. and director of the Fort McKay Group of Companies, a community trust. Mr. Benson retired from an international oil company in 2000 and held previous positions with the Secretary of State Department and Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton.
Mr. Benson is an active member of several charitable and Aboriginal organizations, including the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, Hull Family Services, the Council for Advancement of Native Development Officers and the Canadian Aboriginal Professional Association. He is also a member of the board of governors of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and a director of the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board.
He was the recipient of a 2003 National Aboriginal Achievement Award, the Red Cross Service Award, the Alberta Aboriginal Recognition Award and the Business Development Award. He received the Alberta Justice Crime Prevention Recognition Award from the Minister of Justice and was recognized for his contributions to the community by the Government of the Northwest Territories.
Mr. Benson is a member of Alberta's Beaver Lake Cree Nation. He has three children and three grandchildren.
