Mel sits on several boards, including Director of Suncor Energy and Oilstone Energy, the Calgary Stampede Foundation, etc. and is active member of several charitable organizations. He is also part owner of Tenax Inc. based in Calgary and part owner of Oilstone Energy based in Houston. Mel is skilled at building and directing strong teams resulting in project success. He provides strategic counsel on project cost, structure, land management, environmental management, socio-economics and overall project management, including civil construction and develops and implements strategies and tactics for low costs and high productivity. He has a strong reputation and history of successful project execution. Over the course of several years, Mel has acted as an Aboriginal and/or Corporate negotiator, mediator and has led issues management and conflict resolution on behalf of Industry and Government with several First Nations including on projects such as the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Project and the Horn River Shale Development, to name a few. When Mel is not working he's spending time with his kids at his Bison Ranch, golfing or fishing. Mel has been the recipient of several awards including the Canadian Aboriginal Hall of Fame - 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award for Business and the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Business. Mel is a member of Alberta's Beaver Lake Cree Nation.

He is also part owner of Tenax Energy Inc and Kanatex Energy Inc. Mr. Benson has been a director of Suncor Energy since 2000, serving on the compensation committee and chairing the environment, health and safety committee. He has also served on the audit committee. Mr. Benson retired from Exxon International and Imperial Oil Canada in 2000 after a long career as operations manager and senior member of project management based in Houston, Texas. Earlier in his career, Mr. Benson worked for a federal government secretary of state, and as an instructor of Native studies at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. Mr. Benson is an active member of several charitable organizations. He is a past director of STARS, and past chairman of the Pembina Producers Association. He was recently appointed by Alberta's education minister to the board of governors of NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). He was also appointed, through a cabinet Order-In-Council, to an advisory board on economic development. Mr. Benson is a director of Hull Family Services. Mel Benson is the newest member to be elected to the NAAF board during its annual general assembly (AGA) September 24.
He was elected to Suncor's Board of Directors in April 2000 and is chair of the environment, health and safety committee and a member of the human resources and compensation committee. He is president of Mel E. Benson Management Services Inc., an international management consulting firm based in Calgary, a director of Tenax Energy Inc., Director of CEDA International and a Director of the Fort McKay Group of Companies. Mr. Benson is a director of the not-for-profit organization Hull Child and Family Services as well as a member of the Board of Governors for the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). Mr. Benson retired from an international oil company and held previous positions with the Secretary of State Department and Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. Mr. Benson is a member of Alberta's Beaver Lake Cree Nation.
