Fellow researcher, Professor Meinrat Andreae of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Chemistry believes that as clean air legislation clears the aerosols from the atmosphere temperatures could rise another 5 or 6 deg C.
"The policy implications of such an increase - comparable to the temperature rise from the previous Ice Age to the present - are enormous," he says.

"Both camps are right", says Prof. Meinrat O. Andreae, director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany, a coauthor of the publication.
"With these results we can finally improve our understanding of aerosol effects on precipitation and climate," summarizes Andreae, "since the direct contradiction of the different aerosol effects has seriously hindered us from giving more accurate predictions for the future of our climate, and especially for the availability of water."
Chemical & Engineering News: Latest News- A Matter Of Size, 5 June 2006 [cached]
Meinrat O. Andreae, director of the biogeochemistry department at Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, and colleagues there and at other institutions sampled the atmosphere from a German observatory, categorizing the sizes of particles and their ability to grow into cloud droplets.
And relatively easy measurements of particle size will allow researchers to estimate cloud droplet concentrations in the atmosphere; these measurements are vital for understanding the complex relationships between the droplets and clouds, Andreae says.
